East Learmouth Lakeside Lodges: Patio overlooking the lake

General

  • Dog-friendly lakeside lodges in the Northumberland countryside
  • A 25-minute drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed; 45 minutes to Seahouses
  • Fishing available on site; hot tubs

If it’s time to get away to the gorgeous Northumberland countryside, you’ve done well to find East Learmouth Lakeside Lodges. With a pretty and private lakeside location on a 1200-acre estate and farm, the dog-friendly lodges have a proud spot by the water – and they're only 25 minutes’ drive from Berwick-upon-Tweed.

There’s fishing on the site and horse riding available both locally and along the coast, which is around 18 miles away. Alternatively, head to the Cheviot Hills for bike rides and hikes. Closer to home, there's a shorter woodland walk on site – with a drinks stop in the form of a lodge – or clay pigeon shooting for the especially adventurous types.

After your outing, get cosy back at your lodge. Each one is heated and comes with a bathroom (with a shower) and a kitchen (with oven and fridge), plus a smart TV for a bit of chilled-out downtime. Sunset hour approaching? Grab a seat at your indoor dining area, overlooking the lake on the west side of the site.

Elsewhere around the site, there's a private bar with a full-sized snooker table, and site staff can arrange picnics, afternoon tea or private dining. For other foodie options, Cornhill-on-Tweed is a half-hour walk away and it has a village shop with everything from stamps and a post office service to hot food. There's also a handy hotel that serves excellent food and drink too.

Otherwise, cross the England-Scotland border into Coldstream (10 minutes’ drive or over an hour’s walk), where there are tea rooms, shops, pubs and a series of walks along the river Tweed.

Local attractions

Take your pick of the local towns… Kelso (15 minutes’ drive) is a market town on the river and Melrose (40 minutes) has a ruined abbey and easy access to the Eildon Hills (not a bad idea to wear your hiking boots when heading up here). In Peebles, get set for more activities on the river Tweed.

A whole day can be put aside for Galashiels (45 minutes), which has an architectural trail, access to the 4 Abbeys cycling route and The Great Tapestry of Scotland. It's easy to lose track of time on the Lowry Trail or beach in Berwick-upon-Tweed (25 minutes) and the sand dunes and castle in Bamburgh (35 minutes) too.

A historic fishing village next? Seahouses (45 minutes) fits the bill – and it's also the launch point for the hour-long ferry ride to the Farne Islands to spot puffins and seals. Holy Island (35 minutes) and historic Hawick (45 minutes) on the Scottish Textile Trail are also splendid spots to add to the list.

Must see

  • Berwick-upon-Tweed Castle & Ramparts (20.8 kilometres)
