Well-maintained site with views over Castle Howard's Great Lake

Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, hotfoot it down to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for views over Yorkshire’s poshest country estates.

Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival.

The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups let off a little steam, and it's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room.

Though there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here (especially if you're visiting during one of the high-season concert weekends), active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails.

Liked:	A lovely clean well equipped site with beautiful views along the Lakeside. Scott was welcoming and most helpful, 4 of our friends joined us which made a perfect New year stay, the pitches are a great size and I’m looking forward to staying in the summer time and get some fishing in.

Liked:	Beautiful setting for a small family getaway, it was peaceful with all of the required amenities. Staff were friendly and the owner made sure we had everything we required. It's close to the lovely town of Malton and castle Howard. Pitches were level and the site isn't too large so in peak season it would be a lovely setting with other families for the children to play.
Disliked:	Roads in are a bit treacherous with a caravan, no shop on site. No phone signal, appreciate you go away to get away but when you're in a town you don't know it would have been helpful to be able to use google. No park for children.

Liked:	Lovely site overlooking the lake at Castle Howard, 20 minute walk to the house. You could pick your own hardstanding pitch on arrival. Friendly staff, clean facilities.
Disliked:	No wi-fi signal so unable to monitor our home security or if needed to be contacted in case of emergency. Need transport for any amenities.

First time that we had stayed on this site.The pitch we had was hard standing with electric hook up. Plenty of room to put up an awning and park the car. Very spacious pitches.
The site is within the Castle Howard Estate and allows access to the House and Gardens at a special rate whilst staying at Lakeside
Location of this site is also a good base for visiting Malton and the surrounding area.
Friendly greeting from staff at reception on arrival.
We will definitely return, preferably in the summer months, to fully appreciate the beauty of this location.

Disliked:

Would have been useful to have wi-fi facility on the site.
Also, a shop that sells newspapers, milk, bread etc would have been good.

Liked:	Location was superb for visiting Castle Howard and surrounding area. Hard standing pitches were a good size, easily accessible and level. Mature trees dotted throughout the campsite, which were beautiful in colour at this time of year. Touring pitches near to toilet blog. Plenty of hot water. Powerful showers. Good booking in system Covid system with wrist band for toilet block worked very well
Disliked:	Ground very, very wet surrounding every pitch. Didn't see any dog poo bins on this site, yet this site is dog friendly. Toilet block in need of an upgrade. Cleaning of the toilet block was very poor indeed, if done at all General lack of site care and maintenance to the block.

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river.

Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars).

Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
