Brakehill Lodge Farm: The barn

General

  • Scenic orchard site on a Norfolk farm
  • Half an hour from Thetford Forest and 50 minutes from Norwich
  • Craft courses and farm shop selling honey, bread and veg

In need of a peaceful getaway that lets you unwind while still keeping your hands busy? Crafty guests should thread their way along to Brakehill Lodge Farm, a family-friendly orchard site on a Norfolk farm half an hour’s drive from Thetford.

With a whole farm to explore, there are scenic walks to take and lengthy bike rides to make, and the peace and quiet to sit down and finally finish that book that’s been taking up space on the nightstand… If switching off completely doesn’t quite fit the bill, never fear: the site regularly runs a whole host of craft courses, from soap and candle making to beekeeping (just remember to check course dates before travelling if something specific is desired).

The site’s also within half an hour of Thetford Forest, putting guests within easy reach of lots of walks, mountain biking trails and the long-distance Peddars Way. That sounds like hungry work so luckily, there’s a small shop in the on-site farmhouse where honey, homemade bread and homegrown veg can be picked up.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 21 consecutive nights.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

BLF is a wonderful campsite. We can’t wait to go back!05/03/2021

Things we particularly liked about BLF - It’s location. It’s owners (Alex and Claire). The facilities. The secluded and tranquil feel of the place. The fact BLF only has six tent pitches.

We booked our stay at Brakehill Lodge Farm based purely on the reviews we’d read of the place. When we arrived, we were absolutely delighted that we did. BLF is a wonderful site, set in a beautifully tranquil location. The facilities are quirky (set in an open barn) and the owners are attentive without being intrusive. There are a number of walks that can be taken from the campsite, as well as many more just a short drive away. At night, the sunset through the trees is beautiful, and that soon makes way, should the clouds disperse, for the skies above BLF to come alive with bright stars, shimmering visible planets, and tumbling satellites that are all viewable with your naked eyes.

Brakehill Lodge Farm is a ‘must see’ if you’re serious about tent camping. We are already checking our diaries to find our first opportunity to come back here.

    Disliked:

Only staying for three nights. We could’ve happily stayed here all week!

Friendly informative welcome. Quiet and intimate site. Great spot for watching the sunset and seeing the stars. Pretty flowers and fairy lights next to the barn which was a lovely touch. Nice and clean in all areas. Location was great for visiting close by towns and villages.

    Disliked:

Didn’t effect us whilst being there but thought 1 shower might be an issue when at full capacity.

From the manager...

Dear Alice,
Thank you for the photos and kind remarks.
Hoping to have more showers for 2021.

We had mixed weather so loved the option to use the barn, games room, kitchen/diner and the outside bonus was plentiful logs for the outdoor fire pit. Amazing sunsets, great local Indian Restaurant, Derham for take away on 1st night. Handy fridge too! Felt very Covid safe as the owner was very careful about who she allows to book.

    Disliked:

Just the noise of the wind but you can’t do anything about the weather and it calmed down after a few days (we stayed a week). It’s a little way from the coastal areas and the Broads but we wouldn’t have had the sense of peace and rusticity that you got from the farm so it’s a balancing act.

Local attractions

Attention all fishing fans angling for a real catch of a getaway: will proximity to the well-stocked and spectacularly scenic Loch Neaton fishing lake (a mere 10-minute drive from base) prove to be enough of a lure? Pull up a slice of bank and cast a line to try and land carp, bream, perch, roach, rudd, tench or pike in a lucky catch.

Not everyone’s a fan of quiet afternoons with rod and reel, of course. Not to worry, there are plenty more fish in the sea... The Norfolk coast is about an hour’s drive away – head to Holkham beach for swimming and sandy strolls, or make Great Yarmouth the target if the family likes its beaches with a side order of zoo, aquarium, model village, pleasure pier and casino.

History hounds will be well-served hereabouts. The market town of Hingham is 15 minutes from the site and is chock-full of stunning Georgian piles to gaze upon, and the spectacular moated Oxburgh Hall is half an hour away. Prefer to be nosing around in the much more distant past? The Neolithic flint mine Grime’s Graves is well worth a pitstop.

Anyone needing a day of shopping and culture should get in the car for the 50-minute drive to Norwich city centre to explore England’s biggest six-day indoor market and check some of the Norwich 12 (the city’s most iconic buildings) off the list.

Must see

  • Castle Acre Castle (17.3 kilometres)
  • Grimes Graves (18.6 kilometres)
  • Banham Zoo (19.7 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Oxburgh Hall (20.6 kilometres)
