By the Red Phone Box: Tent with kitchen pod

General

  • Off-grid eco-friendly glampsite on a working farm in the Teme Valley
  • A 30-minute drive from Leominster, Ludlow and Kidderminster
  • Glamping in bell tents with private bathroom and kitchen

Are quiet and secluded countryside stays calling? Look no further than By the Red Phone Box, a family-friendly glampsite 10 minutes’ drive from the Worcestershire market town of Tenbury Wells.

Amid meadow grasses on a Teme Valley working farm, this is a top spot for making the most of scenic rural vistas. Views of Clee Hill can be taken in from site, and a host of lanes, footpaths and bridle ways start on site to take rambling guests on countryside strolls. The natural setting is enhanced by the free-range cattle, pigs, sheep, horses and chickens, but don’t worry – fencing ensures they can’t show up at tents unannounced (and neither will anyone else, as each tent sits within its own private field here…)

If nature-filled and eco-friendly hols are of importance, the site has all the credentials: all lighting is solar, and the site operates a recycling system. When temperatures drop overnight, stay cosy with the hot water bottles provided by the site team. Eco-friendly toilet and shower facilities are provided too, with each tent having its own private facilities.

When it comes time for eats, barbecues are welcome on site and meals can also be prepped in the kitchen that's provided with each tent. Maps and wildlife books can be borrowed to find out about the local area, and there's also an honesty shop, which stocks local jams, preserves, chutneys, honey and apple juice. Condiments sorted, stock up on bulkier fare – sausages, bacon, eggs and (when available) veggies – up at the farmhouse.

We had a wonderful stay, the weather was not on our side, but even with heavy rain and gales the tent didn't budge and it didn't dampen our spirits. The children absolutely loved it and were thrilled that they were able to also go and visit the animals on the farm.

The owners were fantastic, friendly, helpful, very knowledgeable for ideas on walks and where to eat, nothing was too much trouble. A very peaceful campsite, with great facilities, it was just the break we needed.

Fantastic small site, friendly owner and great quiet location. Toilet and shower facilities were great - shower was powerful and hot! Provision of a wheelbarrow to help you move your kit from the carpark area to your camping pitch was very welcome, but the distance wasn't far really anyway so you could without. Location was great for exploring nearby Tenby Wells and Ludlow. Some beautiful surrounding countryside.

The fact it was a working farm. We saw 2 cows give birth in the field next to our tents. Such a brilliant experience for the children.
Smaller site so it was very personal and we felt at ease and very secure.
Staff are so approachable and friendly and just went out their way to help us. Good local knowledge and links within the community and we were able to take the children fishing at a recommended area very close to the site.

    Disliked:

There was nothing to dislike. Such attention to detail and great safety measures in place. I have been recommending it to friends.

The friendly owners, Emma could not have been more accommodating, even moving our booking when Storm Francis hit. The campsite is immaculate and Emma took the time to show us round the farm to meet piglets, calves and chickens. We even got to see two calves being born and my son got to name one. We were really unlucky with the weather but we had a brilliant time and met some amazing fellow campers. This is a beautiful peaceful campsite, suitable for families, solo travellers and couples. Anyone really but not somewhere to go wild and party. The tranquility should be preserved.

Local attractions

Close to the borders of Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire, this site is well-placed for adventures of all kinds. There’s a wealth of urban spots hereabouts, so be sure to cross as many off lists as possible, starting with the museum, swimming pool and shops of Tenbury Wells and the bars, restaurants and brewery of Cleobury Mortimer (both within 10 minutes’ drive).

Farther afield, Ludlow (25 minutes) is a must for its castle, market, shops and brewery. Leominster and Kidderminster (both 30 minutes) have even more to entice, from Grange Court and the start of the 40-mile circular Black and White Trail in the former, to the Severn Valley Railway, railway museum and West Midlands Safari Park in the latter.

Bigger urban days can be had in Hereford (45 minutes), where visitors should wander about the Black and White museum, the waterworks museum and – perhaps most importantly of all – the cider museum.

If history is becoming the draw, the site’s within 35 minutes of Great Witley Court, Berrington Hall, Brockhampton, Croft Castle, Hampton Court and Stokesay Castle, and also within 35 minutes of Stockton Bury Gardens, Ralph Court Gardens and Hampton Gardens.

Must see

  • Ludlow Castle (12.5 kilometres)
  • Witley Court & Gardens (English Heritage) (14.8 kilometres)
  • Stokesay Castle (22.0 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Brockhampton Estate (17.2 kilometres)
  • Croft Castle and Parkland (19.0 kilometres)
