  • Well-maintained and family-run site in the Shropshire Hills
  • Close to the Welsh border and 35 minutes' drive from Shrewsbury
  • Outdoor activity and crafts centre on site
It might be old-school, but there's nothing too basic about The Old School Campsite in Shropshire, a family-friendly site 40 minutes’ drive from Shrewsbury where hiking the hills, strolling the scenic countryside and canoeing the Severn are all a cinch. The site’s close to the Welsh border and on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so expect lengthy walks through pretty hills and dales as well as splendid views all around.... and plenty of peace and quiet next to firepits in green fields, setting the barbecue smouldering for dinner and taking in the starry night sky. By day, stroll over to the site’s activity centre for a host of arts and crafts workshops: guests can embrace their artistic sides with silver jewellery, felt, knitting, enamelling or batik workshops on site, to wrap up stays with handmade souvenirs to boast about back home. If that sounds too laidback, spend time at the activity centre chatting to owners Rachel and Stuart instead. They’ll help guests to organise rock climbing days, paddleboard lessons, canoeing trips on the Severn and the Montgomery Canal, and mountain biking excursions on the trails nearby – or venture out solo on wanders along the long-distance Shropshire Way, which passes within minutes of the site.

Monty on-site caravan

Liked: Very clear directions from the road how to get there. Very warm, homely and cozy Monti caravan. No problem contacting the owners, plenty of activities for children. Beautifully kept grass, many toilets, showers and sinks.

Disliked: No WiFi coverage and that's a big no no for us. The owner says that we can catch WiFi closer to the family home however, I would expect WiFi for this price.

3 powered grass site (XXL)

Liked: On arriving we found a petit site with a mix of glamping tents and pitches. Pitches were a good size. The site is situated in Shropshire near the Welsh border and offered activities and crafting which we did not know about until we arrived. The campsite has little night lights which allowed you to see the stars at night.

Disliked: Unfortunately we did not have any phone signal being so remote so we had to rely on the site limited Wi-Fi to keep in contact with family. The pitch was next to a road but did not cause us to much trouble. The showers were available for 50p and unfortunately the washing up facilities lacked hot water which was a pain when your trying to wash up.

Liked: Owner seemed nice and clean and tidy site , some nice views of the surrounding hills .

Disliked: Small site and Very noisy main road literally right next to the campsite , lack of sleep due to road noise . Half the amenities not working , ie no hot water and an extra 50 pence for a short shower !

Liked: We wanted to be near friends so the location was perfect. It was quiet and the pitch sizes were fab. The countryside around here is beautiful and this is well placed for exploring it all. It was clean and well kept.

Disliked: It did feel a little like camping in someone's garden. I could see the pitches through the hedge and they looked much more like our kind of camping, this is just personal preference though. It was a shame we weren't able to book any of the activities. Possibly a little more expensive than we would usually pay for what is available.

8 powered grass site (XL)

Liked: The campsite was well maintained, surrounded by beautiful scenery in a quiet location. The facilities were close by and high quality, heated in the evenings. The owners were away, but their father was attentive and helpful. The kids enjoyed free rein and making friends with the owners children too.

Disliked: Sadly, due to the owners being away all the outdoor activities, crafting, shop and more; that had drawn us to the campsite, were not running. This put a dampener on the stay, as the children were looking forward to certain activities. The laundry facilities were also closed, therefore we cannot comment on their quality. There was dog poo left on our pitch from previous campers, which we had to clear up.

7 powered grass site (medium)

Liked: We arrived and checked the notice board for any changes to our pitch number, and were greeted with a really spacious pitch. Enough for our 6 person tent, our car and room to move around. The site was clean and the amenities were all convenient. Spent a long time waiting for the shower on our first day, until I realised there were other ones we could use. We purchased some logs and snacks from the shop using a QR code. Brilliant site, and will definitely keep on our favourites’ for a return visit.

Liked: Peaceful, scenic location. The campsite was clean and pitches were well spaced out. Facilities were accessible and suited our needs.Fresh bread in the morning was a tasty bonus.

Disliked: No stool in the shower so bit tricky to get dressed with a wet floor. However this was discussed with the owner and was welcome feedback.

3 powered grass site (XXL)

Liked: Beautiful site in a great position for walks and visits to surrounding areas. Friendly owners Loved the 'tuck shop' and the fire pits and logs available for £7 per bucket of wood with firefighters Lovely walks direct from site and Rachel brought us some maps and told us where the nest walks were

Disliked: Loved this site in general however a few things bothered us.... We were there from Monday to Friday and the toilets and showers were only cleaned once (that I could tell) in that time The site is right next to a very busy road and the traffic noise kept us awake every night and woke us up every morning (not the fault of the site owners but worth a mention) There is only one shower and two toilets on the site apart from 2 eco showers and 2 eco toilets (which were locked when we were there). The site wasn't full but we still had to wait for the shower and toilets a few times

Local attractions

There’s plenty hereabouts to keep even the most avid explorer busy for lengthy hols. As well as the long-distance Shropshire Way, the site is within half an hour of trails at Manstone Rock, the other Stiperstones (and the rest of Stiperstones National Nature Reserve), the Shropshire Hills and Long Mynd. Looking for a getaway for the history books? Dive right in at the House on Crutches Museum 15 minutes away in Bishop’s Castle for an overview of the area, then get a bit more specific at Snailbeach Lead Mine (check ahead for opening times) and further afield at Wroxeter Roman City and Vineyard. If that’s still not enough time in the past, glide to stately piles and old castles at Powis, Stokesay, Ludlow and Wilderhope within 40 minutes, or jump in the time machine for a day at the birthplace of the industrial revolution – the open-air Ironbridge Gorge museums. When travelling with impressionable minds, give kids (and grownups) a secretly educational outing among the beasties at Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom within an hour, hear about near Earth objects at the Spaceguard Centre and observatory 40 minutes away, or (and?) swim with the fishes (not literally) an hour and a half from base at Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port.
