The Area

General

  • Peaceful family-friendly site on the banks of the River Severn
  • Shrewsbury sights, restaurants and shops within 15 minutes' walk
  • Half an hour from Ironbridge Gorge and the Shropshire Hills

In need of an escape? Settle in at Camping at West Midlands Showground, a family-friendly Shropshire site less than 15 minutes’ walk from Shrewsbury town centre, where tourist sites and shopping are within easy reach and there’s plenty of green space for kids and the pooch to run wild on.

Peaceful urban getaways are a dream here: days can be spent wandering the winding medieval streets of Shrewsbury, exploring castle and abbey, strolling around gardens and parks, following the Darwin Town Trail (the evolutionist was born here) and taking boating trips on the Severn. Bliss, no?

Anyone fishing for a good time should swim back to site and cast a line in the Severn. On the Greenhous West Mid Showground, the site’s pretty basic, but it does have its own fishing rights – plus it's well set for getting the most out of Shropshire and Shrewsbury explores, and finding fab eateries, pubs and ways to pass the time will be a piece of cake.

Speaking of cake, there are plenty of restaurants in Shrewsbury for local bites, and barbecues are welcome on site for anyone keen to take care of themselves.

Please note

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Small, level site with 16A electricity and close to toilet block.10/29/2020

We Were booked onto Darwin site and could see Darwin’s house across the show ground. 16A electricity available. Within 1 mile of Shrewsbury.

    Disliked:

Toilets and showers were done to a minimum standard. Gents toilet door could not be secured closed, so exposing wash area to campers. Showers were too small to get a good clean with a minimum of space both in the shower and the changing area. No agent on site. We were told in a telephone call that full instructions for the sir had been sent, by email. We never received them. (Big thanks to the gentleman staying there who guided us and described the facilities etc.) Had we wanted a pitch with grass for an awning non were available due to parked cars in these pitches. Availability of water was marred by the only tap available with a standard screw fitting was being used by a large motor home with a permanent connection. The other tap was too large to connect to.

Ease of access and proximity to town. The pitches were level and the facilities nearby. Friendly staff.

    Disliked:

Showers were cramped and only one hook with only one of the 2 showers appearing to work.
There was a dog yapping constantly and I mean constantly, through the day in a nearby MoHo - v annoying.

Local attractions

Once Shrewsbury is well and truly explored (don’t forget a pitstop at The Mount, birthplace of Charles Darwin), venturing out into nature will be a welcome break from bricks and mortar. The site is a little over half an hour’s drive from the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where scenic wanders, horse riding, gliding and paragliding are the order of the day.

If those walking boots haven’t seen enough action, make tracks for Buttington (35 minutes' drive) to join the Offa’s Dyke long-distance path and follow 177 miles of England-Wales border – alternatively, rest weary legs with a scenic boat tour along the Severn, leaving 15 minutes away.

There’s plenty of history hereabouts, so dive right in with a look inside the fab 18th-century mansion at Attingham Park (and a stroll around the gardens and parkland) or a stop at the spectacular Sunnycroft villa in nearby Telford. Go from finery to industry by trundling along to the Ironbridge Gorge UNESCO site to explore the birthplace of the industrial revolution, making time for the recreated Victorian town of Blists Hill, the Coalport China Museum and the world’s first ever cast-iron bridge.

Stay in the past (the very, very distant path) with a trip to Wroxeter Roman City and Vineyard, or return to the present with some modern urban days: Telford is half an hour away and has a snowboard and skiing centre that should keep families entertained, and Birmingham Is a little over an hour and a half from base if a real big city vibe is needed.

Must see

  • Much Wenlock Priory (19.1 kilometres)
  • Darby Houses (Ironbridge) (19.9 kilometres)
  • Blists Hill Victorian Town (20.2 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (7.3 kilometres)
  • Attingham Park (7.4 kilometres)
