Ooh, this place is an Eden for anglers… a peaceful, tree-lined patch of the Shropshire countryside with five pools for coarse fishing, designed and built by the proprietor who, as you might imagine, is pretty keen on the sport himself.

A five-minute drive from Oswestry, Weston Pools Village is a green and well-tended site, whose ponds for match and pleasure angling are stuffed with carp, barbel, tench and bream.

It can get chilly out there contemplating the waters, but that can soon be remedied thanks to the heated washrooms with piping hot showers. There’s also a cheery clubhouse with a bar and fresh hot food served on Friday afternoons and for Sunday lunch, and further eating and supping options a short distance away in Oswestry. Barbecues are allowed on site.

If by chance there should be a few hours when you’re not landing 20-pound monsters on the pools, there’s grand stuff to get up to in the surrounding area. Start in Oswestry with wanders round the town and Cambrian Railway museums and walks to Oswald’s Well, where legends say the limbs of the eighth-century King Oswald were dropped by a raven. 'Tis a myth, but you may have heard fisherfolk telling bigger whoppers…

Liked:	Lovely area not far from home, but ideal for a short break. Clubhouse was good COVID safe and welcoming.

Friendly staff. Plenty of fishing available. Quite site. Short drive to local communities.

Disliked:

Was told to pitchup on a car parking space to start with. Contacted management and was directed to a proper full service pitch. Which had its drain above the hight of the caravan gray water outlet which ment it didn't drain properly from the caravan. The drain had to be unblocked before we could use it. Luckily we had a short piece of hose, and the water pressure was so high it was like a pressure washer and cleared the blockage. The hard standing is so rocky that it was almost pushing through the awning carpet. (Needs grading). Didn't use the bar as Covid regulations looked bad from the outside, 20 people were seated at one table.
All this being said. With a few changes this could be an excellent site. But dont pitch on 17 as the drain is to high.
This will be the first time the owners see this as I didn't complain at the time. And we still enjoyed ourselves there.

The place was lovely with fishing lakes and ducks, fresh air and we went for a walk around, the hobbit house was great, very fun for the wife coz she’s tiny!! I had to bend a little when getting around in there but that was the whole point, it was fab!!! We went for a quick meal for tea at the bar which was amazing!!! The clocks on the wall and the millions of bottles all lit up was great, we loved the place, service was good, seated very quickly and the ladies were helpful, polite and served us straight away. Couldn’t ask for more 👍🏻

Disliked:

The whirring fridge in the hobbit house gave me a bad head during the night, no ones fault but my own, as I’m a light sleeper, so unfortunately I woke up at 4am very unwell, so we had to get up and leave earlier than we wanted to, or I wouldn’t have been able to drive home, so at 7am I wanted to drop the key off, but their wasn’t any place to do so, maybe a drop box for future reference. Did not dislike anything else, it was a great night, and we will do it again I’m sure!!

Local attractions

For another good local excursion that won’t interfere with your angling, amble over to the Stonehouse Brewery a five-minute walk away for tours, tastings and a bar brimming with craft beer.

Clear your head then with hikes in the hills: it’s 50 minutes’ drive to the heath-covered slopes and waterfalls of Carding Mill Valley in the Shropshire Hills and to walk the nature-filled ridge of Wenlock Edge. Quad biking, zipwires and clay pigeon shooting are all available at the adventure centre.

To get active on the water, Lake Bala beckons an hour away with canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing, alternatively you could stay on land with a mountain bike trip through the Snowdonia hills or take things easy on a time-travelling steam train trip.

For further time travel, there’s a trio of castles nearby: 12th-century Whittington Castle is 10 minutes' drive away, while Chirk and Powys Castles can be perused within a half-hour trip. Don’t miss a flit round Hawkstone Park Follies either (45 minutes), a madcap estate of statues and grottoes amid cliffs and crags and thick forests.

Smaller companions will be smiling all day at Park Hall Farm (20 minutes), where pig racing and lamb feeding meet zipwires, adventure playgrounds and go-karts. And there’s surely no-one who can’t love a canal boat ride from Llangollen… to find out why, get out onto the water half an hour from base.
