General

  • Adults-only caravan park with two large fishing lakes
  • Spectacular scenery and sunsets in a birdwatching haven
  • Local pub within a mile; two miles from brewery tours

Grownup fishing and grownup stays just seven miles from Skegness: what a lovely Lincolnshire pitstop is Grooby's Pit.

Run by very welcoming Tracy and Neil, this is a friendly adults-only site in seven acres of quiet countryside two miles from the town of Wainfleet (and its famous brewery). It's highly recommended that guests bring or acquire fishing kit before heading up here: the site has two coarse fishing lakes stocked with carp, perch, rudd, eels, bream, tench, roach, skimmers and barbel (and you'll get a discount while staying on site too – bargain).

Fishing not your thing? Settle down for spectacular sunsets, sublime sunrises and splendid lakeside views in this birdwatching haven; amenities are smashing too, with an immaculately-kept heated shower block, launderette, information point, free hot water and indoor double draining sink and worktop for washing up.

Dogs looking interested in this jaunt? They're welcome to accompany you to most parts of the site, as long as they're kept on a lead, are cleaned up after and behave nicely; they can always have a run about at the dog exercise area if they've got their little hearts set on a bit of off-leash time. And if they're then a mucky pup? An indoor dog shower with lukewarm water is also on site, along with a ramp for easy access for larger dogs: your pooch should be delighted…

on arrival, we were greeted by Tracey and shown to our pitch. Every thing was explained, later she told us about the owl and the kingfishers(only saw the kingfishers). The site was fantastic, well kept, good pitch with services. Tracey and her husband are very nice people, they have a little gem, for which we both hope they do well with, and we look forward to a return visit at some point.

Local attractions

A five-minute stroll will take you to the pub nearest to Grooby's Pit; once thirst is slaked there, wander down to Wainfleet (two miles away) for shops and Batemans Brewery tours and a beery visitor centre.

Lincolnshire's seaside capital Skegness is seven miles away and has a fair bit of fun for all in its boating lake, Fairy Dell paddling pool, Natureland Seal Sanctuary and National Parrot Sanctuary.

A bit further along the coast, beachy horse rides can be sorted 25 minutes' drive away and there are some super strolls to be had among the dunes and lagoons at Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve (also 25 minutes). For something with a bit more horsepower, head to Skegness Raceway (15 minutes) for a wheel-rattling programme of banger racing and monster trucks.

Those who hanker after a bit of history on hols may like to take trips to Gunby Hall, a gorgeous 18th-century mansion (10 minutes), Bolingbroke Castle (20 minutes) and the fab flying collection at Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (20 minutes).
