Church Farm: Bell tent glamping

General

  • Among fields and woods on a working farm in Hertfordshire countryside
  • Feed the animals, hunt for eggs and walk the trails
  • Café, bakery, shop and pub, all serving fresh produce from the farm

Amid the tiny villages, broad fields and winding lanes of Hertfordshire, the friendly site of Church Farm is a place of many opportunities. Move to a different pace with a stay at this lovely little farm, where you see farming and wildlife up close... and have a splendid time while you're doing it.

The pigs and goats, sheep and hens on this mixed eco farm may well come and say hello; the whole family can join in the feeding sessions and kids will love foraging through the undergrowth to find eggs for breakfast (have them with just-baked bread from the farm’s ovens). Or let someone else do breakfast for a change: the team dishes them up all day at the café.

In the evenings, build your own campfire and grill bangers bought right from the farm shop or head to the village pub for home-cooked and locally sourced food. On Saturdays in the summer months you can join in the farm’s mighty communal barbecue and singsong... or just hum along if you're not much of a crooner; singing opportunities are not for everyone...

Dogs are welcome at this ecological nonprofit farm, which also focuses on providing training and work experience for people with special needs, and are allowed in the farm café, shop, on the site and in the local pub.

Please note

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

The grocery shop is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

We liked everything. It is very well run, the staff are brilliant, knowledgeable, happy, friendly and clearly love their jobs.
The site was clean, the farm was great fun. There is so much attention to detail.
The loo’s are compost loos but they don’t smell - they even have bunting. The shop has everything you need and is open at sensible times. The cafe does amazing food and the best coffee.
We camped in the woods and it was perfect.
We had a ball and can’t wait to go back.
We loved the ethos of the place.
And it’s a quiet camp site and this is regulated!
I really couldn’t recommend it higher.

The farm is fantastic, my children loved the fairy woodland and feeding the animals. There was space for them to play and we had a great stay.

The compost toilets were well maintained, although we didn't use the showers.

Good access to the site and beautiful views.

    Disliked:

The site relies on other campers to report rule breaking and as such there were a few groups playing music and several dogs off the lead. All other "quiet" sites we have stayed on have someone who pops around to chat with campers and generally just check on these things. I think without this it is too easy for people to push the rules.

You have to pay £12 to have a campfire- even with your own firepit, this should be more explicit (I've never come across this before) as I wasn't expecting this when I paid the the fees.

Nice pitch area albeit on a bit on an incline, the kids had a great time enjoying the outdoors. The farm gives it an extra interest for the kids and ease for the parents. Our kid especially enjoyed the fairy garden. We also went for a tractor ride around the farm which the kids really enjoyed too. The compost toilets were fine and the facilities for washing up also good. Fellow campers were friendly and there were no issues with noise after around 9pm so we all slept well. The local pub was a great option if you didn't want to cook, although there is a comment below on the meal we ordered.

    Disliked:

The cafe was understaffed, on a very hot day, and definitely overpriced which is such a shame. We waited such a long time and when we opened the kids packs, there was only half an apple and half a cheese sandwich alongside the other bits. It was a rip-off for just under £6 - must have cost under £2 to produce. My 4 year old eats a whole apple and a whole cheese sandwich - why were they so tight with it?!! When I gave feedback to a woman in the shop it was pretty obvious she wasn't interested because she said "and how is everything else ok?" And I said "yes - really lovely" and she said "fantastic - ok byeee". Didn't appreciate the lack of understanding when you have little kids wanting a decent lunch and feeling ripped off. Zero empathy.

The pub Gnocchi was terrible and we sent it back - the manager was wonderful - lovely and happy to change - but it should be taken off the menu. We decided not to return the next night - quite possibly because of this experience.

I think the cars would be nicer in a car park away from the tents once everything is unpacked.

You are truly in the countryside unlike many campsites, and you can't hear the roads - massive pluses!! There are quite alot of things to do in the nearish by area to keep the children entertained. The owner is friendly, the field isn't cramped and really importantly you get to choose where you want to pitch (although not alot of flat spots), good well maintained clean toilets etc, plus nice farm-activities for children to do. Farm shop is nice (albeit miles away from the camping slots). Plus for those that like the quiet at night, it really is quiet at night.

    Disliked:

Paying £12 extra to have a fire was unusual - having camped at at least 50 other places I've never been charged unless hiring a fire pit (which we had with us).

Local attractions

Take the woodland trails on the site to spot the wildlife of the area, such as kites circling the skies, bats flitting in the trees, and barn owls hooting at night as you're getting toasty by the campfire (look out for badgers too).

Off site, head to the Tudor pile of Knebworth Castle (20 minutes’ drive), to roam around the palatial house and grand gardens, have a brontosaurus encounter on the life-sized Dinosaur Trail and top it off by swinging like monkeys in the adventure playground. Or you can all reach for the skies at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (30 minutes), to get up close to Spitfires and Vulcans while wandering through a century of aviation history.

Medieval Cambridge (45 minutes) makes a good day trip, where you can punt down the River Cam past the stately colleges, or picnic in the botanic gardens. Open-top tour buses make a sedate way to see the sights, or you can hire bikes (watch out for cobbles).

Though part of the university, the Museum of Earth Sciences is geared towards young minds and hands-on experiences, from fossils to earthquakes and dinosaurs to volcanoes. After discovering the secrets of rocks, you could all try climbing: not many hills round here but Clip n Climb Cambridge has 20 indoor challenges for beginners and mountain goats alike.
