Middlehills Farm Campsite: Camping field and picnic benches

General

  • Immaculately-kept site family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers

Pigs, ponies and proximity to top Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills.

This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas family for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from small people heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly hol by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from pitch.)

Kids will be enthusiastically entertained with the opps to pet and give treats to the Middlehills Farm pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's four-legged lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings.

Facilities at Middlehills Farm are spotlessly kept and include a toilet and shower block (showers are £1 for five minutes or 20p a minute), a small shop selling camping equipment and basic bits, a chemical waste point and a washing-up area.

Please note

A charge of £0.20 ($0.39) applies for the use of the shower.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Toilets were really clean and didn't have to line up to use the ones in the field. Bacon and sausages from shop were delicious. Children liked the pigs and sweets in the shop. Fish and chips at night, ice cream van visited too. We didn't use the bacon and sausage van in the morning but it smelled good. Quiet at night.

    Disliked:

No guidance at all on where the tent pitches should go, would have been helpful to have areas marked to be clear for car access, which would have been helpful as it was really busy. Staff were a bit grumpy. Some children in the playground were a bit boisterous and indescrimimate on who they sprayed with water. No facilities or shelter so would not have been a great site if it was rainy. Satnav took us off the main road between Buxton and site, you can stay on the main road the whole way, took more than an hour from Manchester so not worth the drive for us to return.

Great campsite with friendly helpful staff, amazing play area for the kids, great views. Very clean toilet block with pot washing facilities as well as freezers on site. Butty van on-site, the ice cream can came, what more could you want!

    Disliked:

Having to pay to use the showers. £1 for a minute is not a long time and expensive for the time. Little to no mobile phone signal. No electric hookups for tents.

    Lovely location and facilities

    Disliked:

No wifi and very patchy phone signal - EE
Others campers allowed to burn huge fires using petrol as an exellerant - I was downwind of these and had to walk uphill to sit for a couple of hours to get out the way of it
Singing campers late into the night
Noise throughout the night from local quarry

    Disliked:

Some of the other guests weren't particularly considerate of others being very noisy at 6am in the morning.
The gentleman cleaning the men's toilets was also very rude when my partner my 3 year old needed to use the facilities. He was told to go in the women's which meant him feel a little uncomfortable as a male.

Directions

From Junction 28 of the M1, take the A38, heading for Ripley, then turn onto the A610 heading to Ambergate (you can follow the signs to Gullivers Kingdom). Turn right onto the A6 to Cromford, turn left into Cromford, then right onto the A5012 for approximately 4 miles. You will arrive at a T-junction with the Hollybush pub on your right. Keep straight on for 400 yards and you will see a sign on your left for Middlehills Farm. Turn left over the cattle grid and up the drive. You have arrived.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks.

The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so should you say too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round.

Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too).

To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each.

The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but also quickly recommended are walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.

Must see

  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (5.4 kilometres)
  • Arkwright's Cromford Mills (6.0 kilometres)
  • Haddon Hall (8.9 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Winster Market House (2.7 kilometres)
  • Kedleston Hall (19.0 kilometres)
