- Back-to-basics cabins with views of the Loess Hills in Western Iowa
- A 10-minute drive to stores at Sidney; 20 minutes from Nebraska City
- Off-grid site with a fishing pond and 170 acres with trails to hike
Bijou wooden cabins in 170 acres at the top of Loess Hills bluffs is what you'll get at Horse Creek Adventures – and each with fantastic Iowa backcountry views from raised wooden decking too. They’re all off the grid, and spaced well away from each other so you'll have lots of privacy to enjoy the spectacular views.
Your back-to-basics adventure starts with leaving the car parked at the bottom of the hills. You get to hike up to your cabin, while the owners bring your gear up in a truck. Each little lodge has a spindle picnic table with chairs, a firepit and a few basic cooking items. Barbecues are on the agenda, and you can pick up supplies in Sidney (10 minutes’ drive).
Cabins easily hold queen-size air mattresses (you’ll need to bring bedding), and cots can be rented for a small charge. A seven-gallon container of water and a porta-potty toilet are provided for your use, and otherwise you’re pretty much left to your own devices.
Once you're set up, hit the trails on foot or bike, or simply chill on the deck and absorb those views. There’s a fishing pond too (strictly catch and release) so bring your own rod – no fishing licence is required. Depending on the season, feel free to forage and eat the blackberries.
At night, when you’re snug and warm in your cabin, keep an ear open for the sounds of the foxes, bobcats and coyotes who share this amazing wilderness with you.

Local attractions
You have the best of both worlds here – wonderful countryside to explore and yet within driving distance of a couple of jumping cities. If you’re up for a big night out, head for the Old Market District in Omaha (50 minutes' drive), packed with pavement cafés and bars. Not to be outdone, the state capital Lincoln (an hour and 15 minutes) offers you the Historic Haymarket District, with lots of dining options and farmers’ markets in the former train station.
Get a grip on Iowa history by nosing around a Plains Indian earth lodge at the Missouri River Basin Lewis and Clark Visitor Center (20 minutes), or impress your mates with your in-depth knowledge after touring military displays and an early-1900s country house at the Greater Shenandoah Historical Society Museum (30 minutes). Nebraska City (20 minutes) can hold its own too, with a colonial-era mansion and estate at Arbor Lodge State Historical Park.
If chilling in the wild is more your style, Waubonsie State Park (10 minutes) and Forneys Lake State Wildlife Management Area (15 minutes) are set up for wildlife watching on nature trails, kayaking and the chance (and it’s only a chance) to spot bald eagles.
