  • Spacious manicured park 10 minutes' drive from Jacksonville
  • Canoeing; paddleboating; manicure, pedicure, massages by appointment
  • Two fishing lakes filled with bluegill, bass, catfish and crappie
It sure is a beautiful view at Buena Vista Farms, a spacious manicured park among spectacular scenery in the north-west corner of Jacksonville, central Illinois. The bars, restaurants, shops and attractions of downtown Jacksonville are 10 minutes away but out here you’re surrounded by creekside or woodland trails to wander or bike along. The park’s two private lakes cater both for folk who’d like to fish (for bass, catfish and bluegill) and those that favour paddling about in boats, canoes and kayaks. A basketball/dodgeball court is on hand for exercising your competitive streak and there’s a fab playground where the small sorts can scramble all over a ship and a castle. Not looking your best self after all the outdoorsy activities? Nab a private shower room and book into the spa and salon for pre-party manicures and pedicures, or soothing reflexology sessions and relaxing massages. Handy amenities at the campground include wifi, a bathhouse and a laundry room with coin-operated washing machines and tumble dryers.

Local attractions

Once you’ve wandered along the local trails, head off to Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area, 40 minutes away, for longer hikes, mountain biking, horse riding and archery. As the name suggests, it’s also a super spot for fishing – largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill are among the critters that can be caught in these waters. For a wild swim, take the five-minute drive to Jacksonville Lake. Over in Jacksonville, 10 minutes away, architectural walking tours give glimpses into the area’s heritage, as do the exhibits at Prairieland Heritage Museum. To follow in famed footsteps, head to Springfield, 40 minutes away, for museums celebrating the life of local legend Abraham Lincoln, or Hannibal, an hour away, the site of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum. Kids lacking in enthusiasm for historic attractions? Take them instead to Sky Zone Trampoline Park (35 minutes) or the rollercoasters and water rides of Knight's Action Park (40 minutes).
