  • Bar-restaurant, wifi, satellite TV, safari tours and gorilla treks
Seeking hols that live up to safari dreams? Trundle along to Tembo Safari Park, a family-friendly and family-run site in Queen Elizabeth National Park, 35 minutes’ drive from the town of Kasese in western Uganda. Inside the park limits, Tembo is well placed for animal-spotting excursions: there’s a choice of safaris and treks on site, starting with adventures spying out the buffalo, hyenas, elephants, lions and leopards of Queen Elizabeth. And then? Venture further afield for gorilla treks in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and game drives (and hikes to hot springs) in Semuliki National Park, both about three hours away. Closer at hand, wildlife watching cravings can be handily dealt with less than 10 minutes from home base – it’s an easy drive to Kyambura Gorge, known hereabouts as the Valley of the Apes. The primates are smaller here than their cousins in Bwindi, but if watching chimps swing from the trees and chatter with visitors appeals, then it’s the place to be. Long days out in the animal kingdom can be tiring, so spend evenings holed up in the bar-restaurant investigating its menu of local and international foods with a good side helping of cold drinks. Take in the views over the scenic Kazinga Channel while you're doing so, or catch up with the outside world by logging onto the wifi or switching on the satellite TV.

Local attractions

There’s no shortage of national parks and heady explores hereabouts… follow days at Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi and Semuliki with a look at the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha and the chimpanzee treks at Kibale Forest National Park, each about two and a half hours’ drive away. Then broaden criteria to see what else is around the region: it’s less than an hour to Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of impressive peaks, including the third-highest in Africa. This is a must-visit destination for jaw-dropping scenery and challenging hikes, so be sure to include it on every list. If days in nature begin to tire, make tracks for Fort Portal, two hours 15 minutes from base. The large town has shops and markets for souvenir browsing, restaurants for local eats and botanic gardens to stroll. Lucky enough to be continuing hols beyond stays at Tembo? Travel onwards to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (the border is less than an hour away) or make a beeline for Kampala, the Ugandan capital, to visit casinos, museums, and the Kasubi tombs.
