Connoisseur of cattle? Those in the know say the Nguni cow is the most handsome of all bovines: go and see for yourself at Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary, on a working Nguni station among the wilderness of South Africa’s Waterberg mountains and the Witvinger Nature Reserve.
In a natural bushveld basin surrounded by high peaks, this small and simple site is the starting point for mountain biking trails into the nature reserve where you might be able to spot black eagles, leopards and red rock rabbits. Even if you return encounterless, you’ll have seen lots of the lush valleys of Limpopo province… so do carve out hours' worth of time for scenic hikes. Hikes can be organised with the staff on site, as can days of mountain biking, four wheel drive outings, rock climbing, abseiling and birdwatching.
The site has a small pool for refreshing dips back at base. This being South Africa, braais and barbecues are not just permitted but positively encouraged too: there are firepits and grills around the site and plenty of places to pick up supplies half an hour’s drive away in Mokopane.
The town is also home to the Arend Dieperink Museum, an intriguing collection of artefacts from the Voortrekker settlers and the indigenous Sotho peoples. It’s also where you can book walking tours of the nearby UNESCO-listed Makapans Valley (40 minutes), whose networks of caves contain evidence of continuous human and prehuman habitation and innovation, from three million years ago to the Iron Age.

Local attractions
Half an hour's drive away, and principally given over to protecting rare breeds of antelopes and buffalo, the Percy Fyfe Nature Reserve is bisected by numerous walking and biking trails; tours on foot and on two wheels make a particularly good way to see the hoofed inhabitants of the reserve at close quarters.
An hour away, the Polokwane Game Reserve is another space that’s supremely doable without motor vehicles, and its size means you can cover a lot of terrain in a single day, while looking out for giraffes, white rhino and rare local bird species like the short-clawed lark and Kalahari scrub robin. Also an hour away, the Doorndrai Dam makes a welcoming location for cooling swims and fishing trips, while the wooded trails have secluded nooks for spotting zebras, warthogs and leopards.
To learn more about the human occupants of the region, take a tour of the Bakone Malapa Museum (an hour), a typical BaSotho cultural village where visitors can see maize milled, beer brewed and ceremonies performed, and purchase tribal handicrafts to take home.
If you're heading onwards as part of a bigger African odyssey, it's around three and a half hours to Johannesburg and four hours to the Kruger National Park's Phalaborwa gate.
