It's free, quick and easy!
- Small rural site 10 minutes’ drive from Figueiró dos Vinhos
- Wildlife haven by a creek; swimming lake four kilometres away
- Restaurant serving homemade produce, breakfast, lunch and snacks
Days spent wandering to waterfalls or strolling around some of Portugal’s finest cities, followed by evenings of homemade dinners (crucially, homemade by someone else…) – how laidback does life at Agro-turismo Quinta da Fonte sound?
Those dinners come from the hands of owner Liedewij, who cooks for guests on request six nights a week at this cosy site 10 minutes’ drive from Figueiró dos Vinhos. They’re not just homemade but, in many cases, also homegrown, for much of the produce is sourced from the farm’s own veg garden. Breakfasts, lunches, snacks and ice creams can be had through the day as well, and in summer the terrace tables become the focus of sociable communal dinners.
With all this excellent eating awaiting it’s a good idea to work up an appetite by getting active. Start small by wandering around the farm itself – its peaceful valley setting is quite the wildlife haven, with a creek in the grounds and a waterfall a short amble away.
There are lots more lovely trails to follow in the surrounds of the Leiria district too; a chat with Liedewij and partner Jolein should point you in the direction of something suitable. And if life's not quite relaxing enough yet, they can aid you in booking a massage on site to help things along a bit.
Given its central location, guests might also consider using this little rural spot as a base for dipping toes into city life: Coimbra is 45 minutes’ drive away, and both Porto and Lisbon are doable with a drive of a couple of hours.

Local attractions
Walking kit’s a must for a stay here: Liedewij and Jolein are the keepers of many trail ideas, along with maps to ensure that guests make it back in time for dinner. Marked trails locally range from half-hour jaunts to lengthier propositions that’ll take several hours; if it’s a warm day make sure you schedule a stop at the local waterfall or one of the river pools, or aim for the man-made swimming lake four kilometres away.
Tomar (45 minutes’ drive) was once a gathering spot for the Knights Templar, and it now has the makings of a fine day trip, looking out its ancient Convento de Cristo and wandering through its cobbled streets and along the banks of the Nabão River (or making for the matchbox museum if you’re into unusual exhibits…)
If you’re keen to clap eyes on as much of Portugal as possible, you can also try day trips to medieval Coimbra (45 minutes), check out events at Leiria Castle (an hour and 10 minutes) or sashay over to the seaside at Figueira da Foz (an hour and 15 minutes).
