It's free, quick and easy!
- Well-equipped family resort five minutes' drive from Hokitika
- Glow Worm Dell five minutes’ drive; Lake Kaniere half an hour
- Playground with sports courts and lookout tower; communal kitchen
On the green outskirts of Hokitika, a historic gold-mining town on the west coast of the South Island, Hokitika Holiday Park is a large, peaceful resort run by an eco-conscious family. (How’s this for green credentials? Over the past few years, the owners have planted a few thousand native trees here. In addition, there are recycling facilities and charging points for electric vehicles.)
As you enter the site from Providence Drive, you'll come upon a tall lookout tower (make a mental note to climb it later for views of the sea and the sunset). This is just one of the highlights of the playground, which also includes a pirate ship, a zipline and swings, not to mention heaps of space to run around in and a sandpit. The grown-ups can have plenty of active entertainment, too, with volleyball and basketball courts (balls available from the office) for friendly matches and family tournaments.
On bad-weather days, the activities move indoors to the comfortable TV room, where the kids can watch a DVD, gather around a jigsaw puzzle or plunder the toy box.
The choice of indoor or outdoor extends to the cooking facilities, too. A large, brightly lit communal kitchen has an oven, microwave, fridge freezer, toaster and all the equipment you need to prepare a family meal; there’s also a sheltered (and free-to-use) barbecue area with a washing-up sink. A few simple basics (cold drinks, coffee and ice creams) can be purchased on site; for everything else, head into Hokitika (five minutes’ drive).

Local attractions
In Hokitika you can check out the concrete replica of the Tambo shipwreck and see kiwis and reptiles at the National Kiwi Centre. Catch the sunset at the mouth of the Hokitika River, then, on your way back to the site, be sure to stop at Glow Worm Dell, a canyon inhabited by a colony of glow worms.
Activities at Lake Kaniere (half an hour’s drive) include boating, fishing and jetskiing. There are plenty of trails around the lake, such as the short loop through the Kahikatea forest; if you’re in the mood for something more challenging, a track on nearby Mount Tuhua rewards your efforts with views of the lake, Hokitika and the Southern Alps.
On the Hokitika River, the Hokitika Gorge (half an hour) enchants with its vivid colours: the blue of the water, the white of the limestone cliffs and the green of the vegetation. After taking in the spectacular views, take a stroll through the forest and cross the swing bridge.
