  • peaceful and quiet place on the very shore of Ohrid Lake
  • By the deepest lake in the Balkans in a UNESCO biosphere reserve
  • A few minutes' walk from Kalista and 1km from Hotel Izgrev Aqua Park
Camping Lakeside is rightly named: it’s on the shore of spectacular Ohrid Lake, one of the deepest and oldest lakes in all of Europe and the deepest in the Balkans… and so famed that it’s given it’s name to a lake on Saturn’s moon, via the learned boffins at NASA. Pitches here have lake views – jolly sensible, given the scenery – and are in a peaceful setting close to the Albanian border and a few minutes’ walk from its local village of Kalista. Struga, one of three handsome cities on the lake shore, is 10 minutes’ drive away. The wildlife watching here is stunning: Ohrid Lake is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and said to be the most biodiverse lake on the planet for the number of species living in and around its 358 km² surface. Around 200 types of critter live, swim or flock here, including hundreds of thousands of water birds living on the shore in winter and rare birds such as the spotted eagle. Camping Lakeside is a small site, welcoming families, groups and motorbikers. A supermarket is within a minute’s walk.

Local attractions

You could laze around the lake for days when here, but if you do manage to rouse energy levels there’s a fair bit to get stuck into nearby. Stroll along to local village Kalista first, then wander the four and a half kilometres or so to get to Struga, a peaceful place home to a 13th-century church, riverside beaches and the biggest poetry event in the world at Struga Poetry Evenings. In the opposite direction from Kalista, it’s just over a kilometre’s walk alongside the lake to reach the 16th-century Monastery of Kališta. The biggest settlement on the lake is Ohrid 25 minutes’ drive away, a handsome waterside city that’s been nicknamed the Jerusalem of the Balkans as it was once said to have 365 churches, one for every day. As well as dozens of churches still standing, sights to see include the Robevi family house and archaeological museum (a must for its Ottoman structure) and the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid, the only ancient Greek theatre in Macedonia. The third town on the lake is Pogradec (40 minutes) over the border in Albania: head here for hill hiking, Pogradec Castle, dozens of cultural monuments and regular festivals. Hotel Izgrev Aqua Park and spa is a kilometre away.
