  • Site right next to a selection of well-known sport climbing crags
  • In the Baronnies Provençales park, a five-minute walk from Orpierre
  • Access to sister site’s pool, artificial climbing wall and restaurant
Rock up to Camping Les Noyers, a climbers’ paradise in the Baronnies Provençales Natural Regional Park, for a hol spent scaling some of the 500 or so sport climbing routes around Orpierre. After days scampering up the rockface at this spot sandwiched between the Hautes-Alpes mountains, get a good night’s sleep in a pleasantly shaded pitch near a river. The next morning, the crags are close enough for you to start prepping a climb all over again practically from your tent door. On rest days, head over to the park’s sister site and use the facilities for free – there’s a heated pool for soothing those aching muscles, a bar and a restaurant for getting your fill of French food and drink, and a play area to help the kids let off some steam. There’s also an indoor climbing wall – so there’s no excuse for skipping your training regime when the weather’s not up to much. In between hours of hanging off rocks, and perhaps ahead of a lengthy multi-level climb, stock up on snacks from the shop at the sister park or in Orpierre (around a five-minute walk). The higher up you go, the better the views are over the Ceans valley in this stunning part of the world…

Local attractions

Not so keen on climbing? Or just here for the views over the lush local lands? There are still plenty of things do in Orpierre and around besides scale the crags. Stroll around Sisteron’s medieval citadel (25 minutes’ drive), a particularly pretty sight backed by the huge Rocher de la Baume rock, wandering up to the top for vistas over the village’s orange roofs below. Descend down into said settlement to pick up hiking maps from the tourist office – trekkers will want to wend their way past the fields, prairies, woodland-covered hills and rocky outcrops in this scenic area. More nature is at the Méouge gorges (25 minutes); roam by the river here, taking a dip in aqua-coloured pools or drenching yourself under the cascades if the sun’s out. And if you want some especially tip-top views? Drive towards Saint-André-de-Rosans to see fields full of lavender as far as the eye can see (in early summer), or better yet, fly high with the help of the Site Paragliding De Mison (25 minutes). To top it all off, learn about other Baronnies’ soaring creatures at the House of Vultures exhibition room (50 minutes).
