- Oléron site with easy access to amenities in Le Grand-Village-Plage
- Sandy beach, surf school and land yachting within a kilometre
- Bike hire, natural swimming lagoon and summer activities on site
They call it Camping Paradis Les Pins d'Oléron, and it could hardly be a more fitting name – this Charente-Maritime site is stretched out over almost six hectares on the island of Oléron, with pine trees all around giving the place plenty of shade and a pleasing waft of piney aroma.
Beyond those trees, it’s about a kilometre to the nearest beach, Giraudière, which is a fine place for flying kites, building sandcastles and paddling, and has a surf school and land yachting centre for folk who fancy a bit more activity. In the other direction are the supermarket, market, bakery and restaurants of Le Grand-Village-Plage; the site is just on the edge of town, so it’s an easy trot to get to all of the above.
If you’re planning to venture further afield (and really you should, as this island is most pleasing on the eye), hire bikes on site or in the village to pedal along the many cycle paths. Horse riding, golf and canoeing are other options nearby, and there are plenty of paths to wander along through the forests and marshes.
Upon return from any such outings, swims can be had on site at the splendid natural lagoon, whose gently sloping base and calm waters make it a top spot for mini travellers to take the waters. A play area and pétanque court are on hand for more active times, and throughout the summer site staff organise kids’ club activities and evening entertainment for all the family. When it’s time to flop, take a table at the snack bar’s shaded terrace or pick up meals to take away.

Local attractions
To the beach first, presumably? It’ll take you about 15 minutes or so to stroll through the woods down to the sands (or a shorter jaunt on the little shuttle train in summer), or 10 minutes to get to the surf school and land yachting centre if you’re up for acquiring some new skills.
Skip away from the shoreline to see different parts of the island, perhaps on a canoeing or paddleboarding trip through the marshes (five minutes’ drive), a horse riding day (10 minutes) or a couple of rounds on the golf course (15 minutes). A couple of top walking spots are the bird-filled nature centre Pole-Nature Marais aux Oiseaux (15 minutes) and the hike to Chassiron Lighthouse at the far end of the island (half an hour).
And there’s history to take in too – perhaps learning about the island’s main source of income at Le Port des Salines salt museum (five minutes), taking a walk around Le Château d’Oléron’s citadel (10 minutes) or boarding a boat to Fort Boyard (15 minutes), a former prison turned gameshow venue.
