With a lush lakeside setting and views of the Pyrenees to peer at, you’re in for a scenic stay at Camping et Village Vacances Le Lac. Make the most of the water from this family-friendly site in Boulogne-sur-Gesse by renting pedalos to paddle on the lake, or simply soak up the surrounds on solid ground with lunch at one of the park’s picnic tables. For action away from the lake, energetic folk might like to get involved in games of tennis, volleyball, table football, basketball, table tennis, pétanque or miniature golf on site. Guests also have access to a trio of outdoor pools – including one for the nippers – with a waterslide and diving board catering to acrobatic aquatic types. A playground’s at the park for the kids too, and during high season the team puts on entertainment for the whole gang with chances to get involved in farm visits, canoe trips, outdoor film screenings and singing sessions around the campfire. When it comes to sustenance (and you’ll need some with all that activity going on), barbecues are permitted; a supermarket, as well as a weekly local market, are a couple of minutes’ walk away for supplies, along with restaurants if you don't fancy cooking.

Local attractions

Time to stop and smell the roses? Wander among the plants at the botanical gardens Les Jardins de la Poterie Hillen (five-minute drive) or seek out the wild flowers growing at the Gorges de la Save canyon (10 minutes). To check out architecture as well as horticulture, venture to the Villa Gallo-Romaine de Montmaurin ruins and museum (15 minutes) or amble to Aurignac, a village prettily placed on a rocky outcrop, for medieval masterpieces like a castle and the Notre-Dame de Lorette church. Once you’ve investigated the lesser-known settlements in the region, Lourdes (an hour) – one of France’s most famed towns – is of course a must-visit. The Catholic pilgrimage site welcomes millions of visitors annually to the Grotto of Massabielle, a place where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared in front of a local lady. Set off to another cavern, the Grottes de Bétharram (an hour and 15 minutes), for another subterranean expedition – this underground destination is made up of five levels sitting on top of one another. Back out in the open, the sights of Toulouse, like the Basilique Saint-Sernin de Toulouse, Musée des Augustins and Cité de l'Espace science discovery centre, take an hour and 20 minutes to reach.

Liked: Lovely ‘off the tourist trail’ part of France. Quiet location, very low cost pitch, amazing swimming pool facility (4 pools and slide). Picturesque location near to lake.

Disliked: Some confusion over whether reception building was actually open, leading to a longer wait for check in. The site is quite large, so it is a longer walk to the swimming pool - but it is worth it. Remember to tell the pool reception you are camping for complimentary wristbands. The cafe at the pool only took cash and we were caught short (entirely our fault) but the staff were sympathetic and helpful. There was an all night rave in a nearby field but luckily I found my ear plugs!

Disliked: No air-conditioning or fan in the cabin. No mosquito nets at the windows.
