  • Small relaxed site in scenic setting next to vineyards and forest
  • Table d'hote and barbecues in the orchard; evenings round the firepit
  • Pool, pétanque competitions and resident donkeys
Small, friendly and eco-friendly Domaine Le Poteau in the Gers department was opened in early 2017 by friendly hosts Fiona and Alasdair. Having broken away from full-time kitchen work, trained chef Alasdair now delights in using local produce to prep fresh meals for guests to take away, and the couple hosts dinner evenings in the orchard three times a week, with a fab four-course French menu served as dusk falls. As it's France, you may also care to check out the local produce – easily sorted here too as Le Poteau is next to an Armagnac vineyard, and close to the wine-producing district of Côtes de Gascogne. And as it's France, you may then need to burn some gastronomic calories off… also a cinch, as the Midi-Pyrénées has around 30,000 kilometres of footpaths to tackle including loads of local routes. Domaine Le Poteau is a short walk from the medieval village of Castelnau-d'Auzan, on a hillside and in a wildlife haven, with well-maintained grounds and plenty of shaded spots. Its facilities include communal firepits, a play area and a pool for swims – or lazy floats, depending on how much French cuisine you've sampled… Finally, you must tackle pétanque while here, as the site's weekly competition offers 'disappointing and mildly insulting' prizes for the victorious: obviously you should go all out to win.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: A lovely little campsite in an excellent location. All of the pitches are different and offer seclusion and privacy. Alaistair and Fiona are wonderful (Scottish) hosts who make you feel very welcome. They have put in a lot of work to make the place beautiful. The location is excellent- the village is a short walk away, and the surrounding towns and countryside are stunning

Liked: Very friendly hosts at a perfectly located site next to a vineyard. They even did reservations for you at local restaurants and offered food and a big variety of drinks whilst having organised an evening event for all campers. Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: After picking up our new motor home and booking our first journey : we could not have asked for a better place to be . The owners Alasdair and Fiona are truly amazing ; they made us feel very welcome ; they greeted us on our arrival with a glass of wine ; showed us where the showers and toilets were ; we have to say was cleaned several times through the day and the facilities are clean. ; the pitch was great and very spacious ; it’s a very peaceful relaxing place with amazing panoramique scenic views . it was superb ; we definitely will return again to this beautiful place ; the local shops are friendly and plenty of walks and cycling to do! The wine they sell is good value for money ; the order we got from the bakery Alasdair and Fiona delivered everyday was super ; they make themselves available for all your needs ; and will stop and chat ; they are very friendly ; we have to say thank you to them both for our stay of which we thoroughly enjoyed.. Alasdair and Fiona have created a magnificent place. our stay vas very comfortable and relaxing . We would definitely recommend .

Local attractions

It's about a kilometre from here to Castelnau-d'Auzan on the edge of Landes forest, among hiking, cycling and mountain bike trails, and within easy reach of a three-hectare lake for fishing and boating. The village is surrounded by vineyards if you're up for investigating the local vino; call into the tourist office for info, or ask Fiona and Alasdair for their tips on local tours. For sightseeing days, the medieval town (and Armagnac producers) of Condom can be reached in about 30 minutes, and department capital Auch in just over an hour. Closer to home, the handsome town of Montréal or Montréal-du-Gers is within 15 minutes. Other options for days out include Guinlet golf course, about 10 minutes' drive away, races and a driving school at Circuit Paul Armagnac in Nogoro (35 minutes), or the swimming and adventure park at Lac d'Aignan and boat tours and châteaux in Nérac, all within 40-45 minutes.
