The handsome Lozère town of Meyrueis near Camping Le Jardin des Cevennes is known as a most nifty base for Languedoc-Roussillon highlights. (And its riverside restaurants are well worth a look too.)
Have a hol here to be within striking distance of the Gorges du Tarn to the north, the Gorges de la Dourbie to the south, Mont Aigoual to the south-east and the Grands-Causses and the Gorges de la Jonte to the west – or to tackle the several scenic hiking and mountain biking trails running from or close to the town, and to climb and canyon in the nearby mountains.
Swimming and fishing in the Jonte and Brèze rivers are also available in the area – within a mere 100-metre stroll if you make your base Camping Le Jardin des Cevennes. It's a peaceful family-friendly site, just outside the town and between the Cévennes National Park and the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park.
Le Jardin des Cevennes is scenically set on green space with well-kept gardens. It has a swimming pool with slide, a pétanque court, a playground, table tennis, table football, a communal barbecue, a grocery shop and a snack bar with terrace. Activities and sports tournaments for kids of all ages are run by the staff in summer.
There's also a campervan service point on site – so you can check all is tiptop with the apple of your eye before setting off again into the southern France countryside.

Local attractions
Take one of the walking, cycling and mountain bike routes from or close to Meyrueis, dabble in local fishing or swim in the Jonte and Brèze rivers, all within easy strolling distance of the site. Horse and donkey riding are both available within four kilometres.
Several climbing and canyoning sites can be found among the nearby mountains within 15 kilometres or so, along with canoeing in the spectacular Gorges du Tarn, among the deepest gorges in Europe and some of the most spectacular scenery in France.
At the nearby Gorges de la Jonte, head to Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers and the Maison des Vautours to see vultures in the wild: one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region after the birds were reintroduced to the gorges in the 1970s. For locals of a different flavour, the Randals Bison buffalo ranch is within 10 kilometres of Camping Le Jardin des Cevennes.
Subterraneanly, the famed pink cavern of Dargilan, the biggest cave in the Causses and the Cévennes, is five kilometres away and the cave system at Aven Armand within eight. This latter is crammed with stalactites and stalagmites to see, including the 30-metre Grande Stalagmite, claimed to be the tallest (so far) discovered stalagmite in the world.
