  • Laidback site with direct access to a pristine Caribbean beach
  • Bordering the El Corchal nature reserve, with excursions organised
  • Cooking and dance classes on site, plus boat trips and village visits
Sound the stunning location klaxon, for Urantia Camping, around 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Sabaneta in the Sucre area and 50 minutes' drive from San Onofre, is certainly a worthy recipient of such an honour. Those with an eye for a spectacular beach may well have already found their attention being drawn to the pics of the sands attached to this place – and with good reason, for the site opens out onto a stretch of Caribbean beach. That, of course, means access to the sea as and when you want it, plus plenty of space for sunbathing or games of beach soccer and volleyball. A cabana has been set up out on the sands for those who’d simply like to laze in a hammock and take it all in. And there’s more beyond the beach… the site also borders the El Corchal nature reserve (aka ‘El Mono Hernández’), a place of hiking and bike trails around lagoons, mangroves and estuaries and with plenty of wildlife to spot along the way. If you don’t fancy trekking off into unfamiliar territory on your own, ask site staff to organise outings; they’re happy to help sort such things, along with fishing trips and visits to nearby villages to meet the locals. The folk here are also keen to give guests an insight into Colombian culture, so they often organise things like cooking sessions and dance classes on site. Naturally, such a setting lends itself well to evenings nursing a beer by the campfire or barbecue, admiring the stunning sunset and watching the stars come out overhead. If you’ve got more elaborate dinner plans, take supplies to the communal kitchen area or sample some of the area’s fine fresh seafood at the bar/restaurant.

Local attractions

With all the action going on around the site itself, it’s likely that you’ll want to spend a fair amount of time (potentially the remainder of your life) simply bimbling about on the beach, honing your cultural skills and signing up for the day’s outings. If, however, you’d like to expand your horizons to take in more of the Caribbean coast, your first move should be a boat trip to the islands of Tintipán and Múcura – these tiny specks of land are classic paradise islands, fringed with white sand beaches and coral reefs to snorkel around. Boat trips leave from Rincon del Mar (an hour and 40 minutes’ drive) or can often be organised on site. The other must-see along this stretch of coast is the handsome city of Cartagena (two and a half hours away). The colourful seafront city has a splendid Old Town and cathedral, city walls to wander and a modern art museum to mosey around.
