  • Peaceful site with scenic surrounds, 30 minutes' drive from Ouro Preto
  • A 10-minute walk from Cachoeira do Castelinho waterfall
  • Stream with swimming area; kitchen with oven, stove and fridge freezer
Looking for a peaceful spot in lush, green surrounds? Perhaps with somewhere to take a dip during the day? Check out friendly Minas Gerais site Camping do Chará, a streamside site on the outskirts of Chapada. It'll take around five minutes to wander to the nearest bar in this pleasant little colonial town, and guests staying here are also a mere 10-minute stroll from the Cachoeira do Castelinho waterfall: if you're soothed by greenery and the sound of running water, you may well want to stop here and idle away an hour or two. Slightly further afield, the bigger town of Ouro Preto is half an hour away by road. This is a rustic site indeed: a large, grassy area with shaded spots and forest views is set aside for guests to pitch up in and there's also an alfresco swimming area courtesy of the stream that meanders through the site. Camping do Chará is secluded, but there's little chance you'll feel cut off here, as free wifi is on hand (remember to snap some pics of the gorgeous scenery to share online with the lucky folk back home). Other facilities include toilets, hot showers and a shared kitchen space complete with a stove, oven, fridge-freezer and washing up area (bound to come in handy when prepping meals after a day's adventuring). Barbecues and campfires are also welcome here for guests who are up for cooking over coals.

Local attractions

Don't let the name Minas Gerais ("General Mines") fool you: there may be gold in these hills, but this part of south-eastern Brazil is home to more than just industry. Guests with itchy feet should make tracks for Tripuí nature reserve (25 minutes' drive), a sizeable slice of untouched forest that's crisscrossed with walkable trails. Itacolomi State Park (also 25 minutes) is another fab option for wild days out: head here for guided hikes up to Itacolomi rock, and stick around for spectacular vistas over the surrounding countryside. Ouro Preto (30 minutes) is a splendid colonial city: as you stroll around these streets, keep your eyes peeled for the informative historic plaques that fill visitors in on the area's past. Top sights here include the Church of São Francisco de Assis, the Basilica of Nossa Senhora do Pilar and the Museu da Inconfidência (a museum dedicated to the anti-Portuguese rebels that once roamed these parts). Fancy following in the footsteps of prospectors of yore? Mina de Ouro da Passagem (35 minutes) arranges fascinating tours of an 18th-century gold mine.
