- Peaceful family-friendly site with petting zoo and trampoline for kids
- Explorers’ haven: marked walking, hiking and biking routes nearby
- Within half an hour of city sights in Sint-Niklaas, Antwerp and Ghent
Is your fave part of any holiday learning your way around new places? Then strap on your helmet, lace up your walking boots and grab a map, because at Camping Gerstekot, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the town of Waasmunster in Flanders, that should be mission one.
This is a top spot to use as a base for exploring the countryside of eastern Flanders: there are loads of walking trails to pick from in the area between Waasmunster and the city of Sint-Niklaas (less than 10 minutes away).
When you’re all tuckered out from your wanderings, head back to the site – making a pitstop first at the public swimming pool less than 10 minutes from base to cool off – to kick back in peace. Need a break from the kids? There’s plenty here to keep them distracted, so point them in the direction of the playground, trampoline or petting zoo, then challenge them to a game of table tennis or football.
Feeling peckish? Bag supplies at the supermarket five minutes down the road then get the barbie nice and stoked up – have your eats next to the campfire and don’t remember to slip the dog some choice morsels (this really is a spot for the entire family). If you need a break from cooking, plenty of restaurants are within 15 minutes' drive.

Local attractions
There’s lots to draw travellers to this part of Flanders: history buffs might want to head to the stunning Castle Marnix de Sainte Aldegonde (30 minutes’ drive from the site) for tours of the castle and its carriage museum, while explorers and adventurers should chart a course for the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe nature reserve over the border in the Netherlands, or take a sky-high trip in a hot air balloon (lifting off from Sint-Niklaas).
The big draw in these parts isn’t castles or other countries – it’s cities. The site is less than 10 minutes from Sint-Niklaas and half an hour from Antwerp and Ghent, so there’s plenty to entice anyone who’s craving a more urban feel to their hols. Take snaps of Sint-Niklaas’ Stadhuis en Belfort, in Antwerp’s Grote Markt, Cogels Osylei and Zurenborg neighbourhoods, and at Ghent’s Post Plaza, before hitting up museums, galleries, cathedrals and castles in all three.
Only have time for a few stops? The Red Star Line museum in Antwerp is essential for anyone interested in the spread of Europeans, and Sint-Niklaas’ Mercatormuseum is an absolute must for map nerds.
