  • Comfortable lakeside bush park on the Coorabara Wilderness Trail
  • Half an hour from the beaches, watersports and entertainment of Noosa
  • Boat hire, river, lake and island excursions from park; bar and bistro
Ever met a kangaroo? You’re likely to at Habitat Noosa, where a sizeable population of eastern grey roos bounces through the 65 acres of natural bushland on Queensland’s coast. On the shores of Lake Cootharaba, just under half an hour’s drive from the beaches and amenities of Noosa, this spacious site in the Great Sandy National Park combines wildlife days with comfy stays. If you don’t fancy a bush tucker diet, for breakfast, snack items such as pastries or croissants and barista coffee are available on site. There's also an extensive lunch and dinner menu with fresh, locally-sourced food every day at the on-site bar and bistro, plus drinks from the microbrewery. No wonder the kangaroos like the place so much… In addition to eats and treats, this fab Australian site also excels in the watercraft department: wander down to the lake and hire boats, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards to explore the rivers and creeks among the mangrove forests, looking out for white-bellied sea eagles, piebald oystercatchers and pelicans. Habitat Noosa is also handily placed for linking up with the Coolala Wilderness trail, some 30 miles of tiptop subtropical terrain taking you from untouched beaches to rainforests and swamps... meeting dingoes, ground parrots, acid frogs and sand monitor lizards.

Local attractions

The helpful folk at Habitat Noosa know the area like no-one else and as well as being a mine of information on local trails and sights, they also lay on a number of excursions. For active sorts, day-long canoe trips through the shimmering waterways and chattering rainforests of the Noosa Everglades may appeal, with stopoffs for swims and barbecue lunches. If you’re more of a sit-back-and-take-it-in type, settle down on a river cruise or a sunset tour of Lake Cootharaba. Another must-do destination on the excursion list is Fraser Island, and again you can take a trip straight from the site. Fraser is the world’s biggest sand island, made up of vast shifting dunes and multicoloured cliffs, with what must be the world’s clearest and purest rainwater lake in its centre. If you’re a seafaring sort, head half an hour to Noosa for all manner of watersports, whale watching from the lookout point and dives out to the reefs and shipwrecks. For hiking, biking and horse rides inland, the varied trails and diverse ecosystems of Ringtail State Forest and Tewantin National Park are both around 20 minutes’ drive away. After a hit of history? Head over to Gympie and its goldmining museum (45 minutes); if it’s inspired you, hire some fossicking kit from the tourist information office and try your luck gold panning in the Mary river… it’s worked for some.
