  • Scenic small farm site just off the A470 in the Cambrian Mountains
  • A 10-minute drive from Llanidloes and 45 minutes from Aberystwyth
  • Dog-friendly site with kids' holiday activities and weekly pizza night
Seeking a nature-filled getaway with a few added luxuries? Find your way to Belan Bluebell Woods, a family-friendly site in the tiny Powys hamlet of Cwmbelan, in a secluded wildflower meadow on a 60-acre farm. The site is chilled-out in the best way: it’s off-grid so digital detoxes are pretty much a requirement during stays, and each pitch has its own firepit and log seating along with a private compost loo (cleaned every day and kitted out with loo roll and sanitiser). There are a couple of shower shacks on site too, and they're only shared between a handful of guests so there shouldn't be any need to queue. The farm has plenty of paths heading off through woodlands and moorlands – some with spectacular views towards the Cambrian mountains. Owner Suzi teaches at a local riding stables so can sort pony trekking for those who'd like their views to come with a soundtrack of pattering hooves. Guests are well served when it comes to eats, with locally sourced barbecue meat, picnic hampers and lunch hampers available if required (order these as an extra when booking your pitch). Every weekend (usually on a Friday), the site runs their popular woodfired pizza nights. There's also a well-stocked honesty shop. A fairy lights-lit camping barn is on-hand for eating in comfort, with a selection of games and books, phone recharging points and a fridge and freezer. The folk on site are always happy to make recommendations for local bites and drinks too. Llanidloes (a hive for independent retailers) is three and a half miles away; several footpaths lead to town directly from the farm. Guests have access to composting toilets (one for the exclusive use of each pitch) and a well-stocked washing-up area with tea towels and washing-up liquid. No need to lug water around though: the thoughtful folk here will bring it over to you.

Meadow non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Easy to use website. Suzy is super friendly and helpful, allowing flexibility with booking changes too! Facilities great: Attention to details like lighting, bedding, kitchen crockery, spacious shelters for when it's raining.... Showers at perfect temperature! Plus lots of space for kids to run around and games for them to play.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike here! Even the compost toilets were well made, not smelly and had clear instructions on how to use!

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Great location, friendly hosts, nicely set up and pretty site with loads of space. Even though we were on the camper van pitch next to the parking I thought it was good that cars were parked away from the tent and glamping pitches- wheel barrows are provided for luggage transport.

Meadow non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Another lovely stay at the site, lots of upgrades since we last went. Our view is still that this is one of the best secluded campsites in Wales. Joe and Suzi are very friendly and approachable for local knowledge and points of interest, you can tell how much they care about the site due to the time and effort they put into keeping everything 100%. Our kids enjoyed every moment we travelled 5hrs and it’s been worth it again. If anyone has big football fan kids like I do Wrexham fc is 1.5hr drive from site and worth the visit. On site your allocated your own composting toilet, there are 2 clean hot showers. Camp fridge and charging points, a camp fridge with local ales/wine and soft drinks, also so some meats. Camp shop with snacks coffee and teas, payable via a qr code or honesty box. Once a week they also hold a pizza night. Mobile network was also full not that we needed it. We will visit again for sure

Disliked: Nothing your every need is catered for!

Meadow non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely site with very accommodating owners, dark skies and clean facilities. We came to sit quietly, make dinner round a campfire and chill out and that is exactly what we achieved. Plenty of dog walks locally as well as further afield and loads to do in the immediate area for both the intrepid and the less so. As my brothers and I usually go properly wild camping, this was absolutely amazing. Heated showers and a fridge/freezer? Luxury! Can't recommend it enough. Fabulous watching the red kites circling around and periodically diving for their dinner in the same field that you're camping in too :-)

Disliked: Gambled and lost on the weather a bit. Suzi isn't wrong - they're quite high above sea level. Don't underestimate that and check the wind direction forecast when pitching your tent.

Meadow non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I came to stay here with my 14 year old daughter and her friend for 2 nights. I was a bit worried that they may not enjoy camping, being teenagers, but they loved it and said it was just an amazing site. They especially loved the lambs in the nearby field and the horses. This is the nicest campsite that I have stayed at. It was beautiful! Peaceful, clean, and a lovely location. The facilities were great, compost toilet, shower with hot water, washing up facilities, a fridge and freezer in the shed, your own fire pit and sitting area. Suzi was very welcoming, accommodating and friendly. I would love to return here and to stay longer, as I’d like do some walking and explore more of this lovely area.

Liked: The views, the individual loos, the fridge, friendliness, the walks directly from the campsite, beautiful scenery and walking within 20 mins drive and town a few mins drive to buy food, water brought to pitch, washing up facilities

Local attractions

The site’s set up to have a minimal impact on wildlife, so maintain the theme by getting closer to some of the region's impressive birds of prey at the red kite feeding station 20 minutes' drive away in Rhayader, and at the Dyfi Osprey project 45 minutes away on the edge of Snowdonia National Park. The Cambrian mountains make a splendid setting for lengthy hikes and mountain bike expeditions, and there are more scenic explores to be had in the Elan Valley (half an hour) and Hafren Forest (35 minutes). If you want to tick a couple of famous mountain walks off your bucket list, both Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan are about an hour's drive away. Meanwhile, mountain bikers may like to find their way to the trails of Nant yr Arian (40 minutes) or Bike Park Wales (an hour and a half). For water-based adventures it's a mere 15 minutes to Clywedog dam (the tallest concrete dam in the United Kingdom) and its reservoir, where you can book sailing and paddleboarding sessions, or you can seek out the source of the River Severn (20 minutes away in Plynlimon) for wild swims.
