  • Luxurious self-catering lodges in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
  • Pembrokeshire Coast Path 10 minutes’ walk; Broad Haven half an hour
  • In 100 acres of wooded valley and fields; fishing lake and dog walks
With 100 acres of fields to explore, woods and wildflower meadows to stroll, a stream meandering through a sheltered private valley and birdsong filling the air, Timber Hill is indeed a sight for sore eyes and a balm for noise-battered ears. Set in the middle of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, this peaceful spot is handily only 10 minutes’ walk from the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coast Path, and half an hour’s stroll from Broad Haven, its shops, restaurants and family-friendly sandy beach. Accommodation on site is in a small cluster of Canadian cedar-wood lodges, with a stylish, comfortable design and all mod cons. The cosy units are all three-bedroom, with an assortment of double, twin and bunk layouts, plus a kitchen with oven, hob, microwave, kettle, toaster and all the pots, pans, cutlery and crockery you’ll need to conjure up family feasts. There’s a smart TV in the open-plan living and dining area – just the spot for relaxing after a day’s adventuring in Pembrokeshire’s bracing air. To keep everybody happily occupied, head for the games room with pool and table-tennis facilities, or the well-stocked fishing lake (free of charge and exclusive to site guests). Let younger kids run amok at the play area, and have a wander through the meadows to watch birds and insects flit around at the nature ponds. Dogs are welcome and should be kept on a lead around the lodges; the site has lots of fields where they can be let off for a good zoom around.

Local attractions

To get to know the spectacular coastline, hike sections of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path (10 minutes’ walk), or for leisurely family days on the beach, potter down to Broad Haven (half an hour) for its sandy expanse, numerous rock pools for kids to splash around in and surf boards or kayaks for hire. Adventurous souls might like to try out Wild Lakes Wales (half an hour’s drive) for wakeboarding or bouldering along the coastline. Persuade kids away from the beach with the promise of days out on the rollercoasters and shooting ranges at Oakwood Theme Park (half an hour), or amid the cuddly farm animals and Ferris wheel at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (also half an hour). Heatherton World of Activities (35 minutes) is the spot for go karting and treetop rope trails, as well as rainy-day fun solving puzzles in the escape rooms. If you’re keen to see puffins (and possibly dolphins), book in advance to take the boat trip from Martin’s Haven to Skomer Island for a guided tour of the bird colony, and when Welsh history is calling you, visit medieval Pembroke Castle, or have a wander around the 12th-century cathedral and Gothic-style bishop’s palace at St Davids (all 25 minutes), the UK’s smallest city.
