General

  • Well maintained and scenic setting with spacious pitches
  • On the Offa's Dyke Path on the border of England and Wales
  • A 15-min drive from Monmouth; Wye canoeing within a couple of miles

Wales? England? Mosey along to this Monmouthshire site for both. Hendre Farmhouse Orchard Campsite is on the border of England and Wales, within easy reach of days out of all sorts in both countries.

It's no more than half an hour's drive to famed attractions in both lands: the Brecon Beacons, Chepstow, the Wye valley and Raglan Castle on the Welsh side, and the Forest of Dean, Tintern Abbey and Hereford on the English. Even closer to home, the farm is on Offa's Dyke Path for those who fancy part – or all – of its 177-mile route along the Welsh/English border; canoeing on the River Wye is within a couple of miles, and the championship course of the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club borders the site.

Hendre Farmhouse Orchard is a peaceful spot overlooking meadows, rivers and hills, and with the River Trothy flowing through the farm meadows. Monmouth is 15 minutes' drive away.

Lovely site, read the booking terms properly10/04/2020

Site was beautiful, we pitched in the far corner and had an amazing view of the sunset. Facilities were clean and there were wipes and spray to clean down after yourself with. Loved the little extras like the toaster, kettle and communal fridge freezer. Couple who own the site were very friendly.

    Disliked:

Not the site's fault but - craneflies everywhere! Im sure theres still a few in my car.
Also not the owners fault - be aware that the balance is cash upon arrival. I did not read the booking terms properly, luckily we had some cash. Not my finest moment.

    Disliked:

Some electric hook ups crossed a gravel track so campers were driving over the electric cables. Campsite too busy at weekend for the amount of facilities, and COVID spacing.

The peace and quiet, the rolling hills, and the pond. Toilets were clean, and there was enough space to pitch a decent distance from others (though we were there a quieter time of year)

Nice views, kids park, friendly staff, picnic benches and fire pits.

Ground not flat in most parts unless your lucky, no hand sanitizer left most of the time. No shop. Bit close to other tents, so noisy at night with people talking outside.

Campsite is small, and the scenery is gorgeous.

The couple that run the campsite went out of their way to make sure we were happy and had everything we needed.

There’s no phone signal and no WiFi, so we had a perfect break from the outside world.

    Disliked:

The bathrooms are unisex and are open-plan. The toilet and shower cubicles are lockable, but the sinks are in an open space. It’s a bit disconcerting brushing your teeth next to someone doing their washing up.

The campsite got very full on the Friday night, with groups of people in tents pitched next to each other.

The road to get to the campsite is single track. We had a couple of scary moments when we met cars driving in the opposite direction.

Everything! The location, facilities, views and the owners were all brilliant. The site is so peaceful and tranquil and we sat outside each night watching the sunset with the fire pit lit. We watched the wildlife come and go and walked around the site, up to the Oak tree and sat and looked out at the fantastic views. The facititles were amazing, everything you could need and the owners Pam and Ron and the other staff were all so friendly and helpful. We will be back, its everything a campsite should be. Milo (the bacon opportunist) was cute too! x

Local attractions

Get your walking boots ready, because Hendre's setting next to the Sugar Loaf and Black Mountain ranges is among the most scenic hiking country in Wales.

Recommended walks include the Three Castles, a 19-mile route linking the castles of Skenfrith, Grosmont and White, following hills and woods and among views of the Black Mountains, the Welsh Marches and the Forest of Dean. Also to be tackled of course is Offa's Dyke Path, on its southern Wales section around the Wye valley and the eastern side of the Brecon Beacons National Park: just follow the acorns...

You could also try the Celtic Trail, on a route across Wales rather than up and down it like Offa's Dyke, and running west from Chepstow to the county of Pembrokeshire, or the 100 miles of the Beacons Way for a challenging day or two of hikes. In the Wye valley and the Vale of Usk, take the Wye Valley Walk on part of its 136-mile run from Chepstow to Rhayder via Tintern Abbey and Monmouth and eventually Rhayder.

For a shorter local stroll, try the Caerleon Heritage Trail, the Lower Wye Ramble or the Priory Grove Circular Trail.

Must see

  • Caldicot Castle & Country Park (3.0 miles)
