  • Camping on a hilltop smallholding with mountain and sea views
  • A 25-minute drive from Porthcawl; 50 minutes to the Brecon Beacons
  • Alpaca, pigs and poultry on site; access down a private gravel track
Get away above the clouds… Tal-y-Fan Farm may have a high-up hilltop location, but it’s very grounded in the way of facilities. The wild camping site has a composting toilet and hot shower. Mountain and sea views are a couple key ingredients at Tal-y-Fan Farm, as is its fresh water supply. Barbecues are permitted, so it’s handy that there are farm shops within 15 minutes’ drive of the site or general shops within 10 minutes’ drive of the site. Wild campers will be based on a smallholding, which keeps alpacas, pigs and poultry. Access is down a private gravel track, across a common. It’s a great spot for hikes and the likes, with the Brecon Beacons National Park accessible from 50 minutes’ drive of the site and the Gower Peninsula around an hour away too. Even closer is the sea. Porthcawl, 25 minutes’ drive away, has a set of gorgeous beaches, a fairground and surf or paddleboard hire, along with cafés, restaurants and bars. A little further afield is Barry Island (45 minutes), with its lively seafront and arcades, a destination where parts of Gavin and Stacey were filmed. Please note that dogs are not allowed on site.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic host and a real gem of a location with beautiful views of the coast. Ideal size for a quiet stay with a limited number of pitches. I am not keen on the massive camp sites! WC and shower facilities were clean and water hot plus firewood, drinks and food available for purchase at the farm house at very reasonable prices. We could even charge our phones and iPads there. Big thumbs up and will go again!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Very friendly, helpful land owners/hosts. Taught the children about the farm animals, their names, what they eat, etc. Huge pitches, with fire pit. Optional to purchase a big bag of fire logs. Hosts have the farm hkuse at the end of the land, and they have a notice board in the camp site, of all the daily prepared hot meals, breakfast rolls on offer. Also, a shop for essentials, and ice lollies, teas, and cakes. Exceptionally friendly, came to check on us (our 1st night there was a storm) will be returning. Excellent value for money. And the Llamas are just beautiful

Luna bell tent (large)

Liked: Tent features, added extras, host, wild lamas, the funky toilet/shower! Omg, I absolutely love camping and love trying different places! We booked a surprise night away for our friend’s birthday and had a festival themed night, the tent was amazing it was so boho vibe inside, the beds are SO comfy! There is a little kitchen and stove which has everything you could think you need! Beanbags, and an inside area to sitc blankets and little added extras around the tent! This really is a little gem of a place! When you go off to the toilet, you’ll probably be greeted by some wondering lamas they are cute! And the host is lovely, nothing is too much! I would 100% recommend and will definitely be back with my partner next tim!

Disliked: Nothing, I couldn’t fault it!
