  • Peaceful Llyn Peninsula site on the corner of Porth Neigwl surf beach
  • On the Wales Coast Path and 15 minutes’ drive to Abersoch
  • A 20-minute drive from the northern beaches of Porthor, Porth Iago
It may sit at the corner of a beach that translates from Welsh into 'Hell’s Mouth', but guests tend to reckon Treheli Farm Campsite is definitely on the heavenly side… and with its sweeping views out over the water from a setting on a flat ledge a few hundred feet above sea level, it's hard not to agree. Stretching on for four miles, Porth Neigwl is the fab beach in question, a firm fave of surfers for wave conditions the park's owners claim are ‘truly delinquent’. And even if you're not up for getting thrown about in the water, this sandy stretch of shoreline on the stunning Llyn Peninsula is also a sublime spot for sunbathers as it's sheltered from southwesterly winds. Spend days down on this lush bay rockpooling, racing about and rushing into the water before puffing back up the hill to catch the sun going down from a prime position... right on the edge of this hillside site where it's more about peace and quiet than mod cons. Treheli is also well placed for touring the Llyn Peninsula and the rest of Gwynedd: from the site you can go off on seaside roams along a trail that’s part of the Wales Coast Path running around the whole of the country. If strolling isn’t your main activity of choice, Abersoch is a 15-minute drive for surf rental shops and a sailing school with powerboating, paddleboarding, kayaking and yachting; this busy resort is also where to wander for international food with noshing spots ranging from Thai restaurants to Welsh delis.

Local attractions

While you might want to stick to swanning about Porth Neigwl for the whole of your hol in north Wales, other beaches on the Llyn Peninsula are also top for touring: try the curvy bay of Porthor (also known as Whistling Sands) a 20-minute drive away and pretty Porth Iago cove (20 minutes) on the northern coast for starters before driving eastwards to cute and compact Criccieth for its castle ruins and memorable views out over the coast. You can also steer away from the water towards Glasfryn Parc in the lush green hinterlands for bowling, wakeboarding, archery and a soft play area to suit smaller small sorts or drive 35 minutes to Yr Eifl carpark for family walks up to the peninsula’s highest peak. Older travellers – not to mention Italy aficionados – will appreciate visits to Portmeirion a 50-minute drive away for a Positano-style village built over the course of 50 years by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis full of colourful houses and posh eateries.
