Peaceful times near Presteigne, with a pleasing amount of proper comfort too – that’s the setup at Redwood Valley - Woodland Cabin and Yurts, five minutes’ drive from the Powys town of the same name. If it’s breathing space you’re after, you’ve come to the right place: there are 25 acres of forest and wildflower meadow to play with at this family-run site, which runs right up to the brook that marks the border between Wales and England. You’ll likely be sharing the space with a series of wild visitors (deer, otters and owls are among those that favour these parts) but only a handful of other guests. Each of the smart and comfy units here has been given its own secluded spot, surrounded by lots of space for rural relaxing, perhaps while gazing up into the dark skies while stoking up a campfire or barbecue of an evening… Rope swings, nature trails and a brook for paddling are around the site for alfresco playtime, and there’s a collection of books, playing cards and board games for less clement days. Smart compost toilets and gas-powered showers (with eco-friendly toiletries provided) are a short stroll away from the units, along with a hand-crafted wooden kitchen building that’s been well kitted out with fridges, hobs and utensils. You can also pop in here for complimentary cups of tea or coffee whenever you like. If you'd rather head out to eat, there's a clutch of small restaurants and pubs in Presteigne, along with several independent shops to browse in.

Treetop 1 bedroom cabin

Liked: Super clean! Not even so much as a cobweb in the cabin absolutely spotless. Staying in the cabin having use of a toilet and shower privately right next door giving us even more privacy and a lot easier taking the 5 year old the loo in the middle of the night especially having the use of lights outside the cabin and in the toilet. The site is very peaceful and secluded being only one cabin and two yurts the site is not over run by a lot of people making the peace and quiet that much better. The entire site is beautiful and the owners are so kind and welcoming stopping to chat with us to tell us of the sites history and how they built the cabin and kitchen with their own trees!! Fantastic even better when you see that more trees are also being planted around the site! The compost toilets we did not mind and my son loved them throwing sawdust down the loo once he had been! They where kept very clean and aren’t particularly smelly considering! I have used much more dirty looking and smellier toilets on city high streets and festivals. So yes be aware the toilets are compost which was a worry of mine before going but absolutely not a problem at all. Shared kitchen facilities where beautiful and each of the accommodations had their own shelves and separate fridges labelled. That being said we did not use this facility much as we had a BBQ, mini fridge and kettle at the cabin. A lot of nature around it was so nice and peaceful being away from the city life and waking up to the sounds of birds and sheep. Going on walks around the site and coming across deer roaming naturally was perfect! The weather was a little chilly this weekend however the added extra of log burners and wood supplied in the accommodation made it super warm and cosy making it a perfect stay even in the colder months! We walked down to the village for some lunch and chatted to a couple of locals along the way who where all so friendly and welcoming giving recommendations of the best things to do around the area! However if going for lunch you are recommended to pre book as it does get very busy! However we where lucky to be squeezed into a pub with a playground to the back (can’t remember name) which had lovely staff and the most delicious roast dinner! To summarise this was by far our favourite place to stay after many camping/Glamping trips we will most certainly be making redwood valley are hot spot for uk getaways. Just for the sake of being greedy a hot tub would make a lovely addition. Thank you for the most perfect stay, Laura, Vincent and Noah.

Local attractions

Best be packing some comfy shoes, for there’s much to tempt you out for a walk around here. Nature trails are within the site’s boundaries; a few miles of forest trail leads to Water-Break-Its-Neck Falls, and the setting is about 15 minutes’ drive from the Offa’s Dyke Centre, where you can stride out on the path that’s got England on one side and Wales on the other. And you may also fancy a bit of a trot around Westonbury Mill Water Gardens (20 minutes’ drive), the park that surrounds the National Trust's Croft Castle (20 minutes) or the medieval ruins of Ludlow Castle (40 minutes). Avid readers, meanwhile, will no doubt favour a bit of time truffling out treasures in the famed bookshops of Hay-on-Wye (35 minutes). Nippers who’ve had fun seeking out wildlife on site can meet farm animals and see flying displays at the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (20 minutes); folk who’d like to learn more about what’s overhead in this dark sky area will want to head to the Spaceguard Centre observatory (15 minutes).
