Bring walking boots and outdoor gear, for there's loads to do in this locale.
As with most places in Scotland, golfing is well represented and there are several courses to pick from within a 30-mile radius: take your pick from Newtonmore, Kingussie, Boat of Garten, Grantown on Spey, Carrbridge (nine-hole) and the Spey Valley championship course in Aviemore.
The Wildcat team points out there are too many cycling routes in the area to mention, but particularly recommends riding in and around the Glen Truim, Etteridge and Phones estates and, further afield, around Loch Insh and on the Rothiemurchus and Alvie estates. Basecamp Mountain Bike at Laggan Wolftrax has over four miles of black routes and around three miles of beginners' trails to tackle.
For walking, several routes start in and around Newtonmore – ask Eck or Lynne for details – and you'll find miles and miles more around the Cairngorms, Gynack Walk, Corrieyarrick Pass and Badenoch Way, just to start you off.
And for angling, pick up a permit at outlets in Newtonmore or the surrounding villages and make your way to the Badenoch stretch of the Spey, 13 miles of river to try for brown trout, sea trout and occasional salmon.
Excellent indoor options in the area are the Highland Folk Museum and the Clan Macpherson Museum, both in Newtonmore, while a few local musts are the Cairngorm funicular railway (the highest funicular railway in Britain) with scenery to make your jaw drop; the ZSS Highland Wildlife Park six miles away at Kincraig, and Landmark Forest Adventure Park, landing you and the family a topping day out.
