  • Caravan site on a farm on the Rhins of Galloway peninsula
  • A 10-minute drive to Stranraer, 20 minutes to Portpatrick beach
  • Well-equipped rural site with dark skies for stargazing
With the Rhins of Galloway as a backdrop, Low Glengyre Farm is certainly in a fab position for getting out to see splendid Scottish scenery. Set on a sprawling working farm, it has all the advantages of a rural location – peace, solitude and bracing coastal air – yet is only a 10-minute drive from Stranraer for stocking up on barbecue goodies. This Dumfries and Galloway site welcomes nature-loving families and their dogs (please pick up after them and keep them on leads at all times around the site), and with a glen on your doorstep, deer can often be seen nearby, as well as red squirrels and owls. There are lots of walks in the area, as well as the chance to get out cycling, golfing or fishing. Unspoilt villages, lush pastures and quiet country lanes – the Rhins of Galloway has the lot. This peaceful, relatively untouched region also has beaches aplenty (the nearest ones can be reached in around five minutes by road). It’s thanks to the lack of light pollution that the dark skies here are great for stargazing on clear nights, even without a telescope. Amenities on site include laundry facilities, a heated shower room, toilets and hot and cold running water. There are hand-washing facilities at the waste-disposal area, as well as fully serviced pitches.

Local attractions

It’s probably first stop the beach for a good old run around; try Portpatrick (20 minutes’ drive), Laird’s Bay or Luce Sands (both 25 minutes). Other kid-centric fun things to do include fish feeding at Port Logan Fish Pond (30 minutes), petting cuddly llamas and Shetland ponies at Monreith Animal World (50 minutes) and raptor encounters at Bellymack Hill Farm’s Red Kite Feeding Station (one hour 20 minutes). The local micro-climate allows tropical plants to grow, and green-fingered guests might like the chance to see sub-tropical plants at Logan Botanic Garden (35 minutes), rare trees at Glenwhan Gardens, Arboretum and Tearoom (25 minutes) or the rhododendrons at Castle Kennedy Gardens (20 minutes). You can also catch the ferry from Cairnryan (25 minutes) to Larne in Northern Ireland, for a day of exploring over there, or stay closer to home and visit landmarks like the imposing Killantringan Lighthouse (20 minutes) and Glenluce Abbey (30 minutes).

Liked: For us we just need a safe park up over the 3 nights with hook up and it was fine. We only met the owner briefly but came across he would be very helpful if needed. November is not the best for weather so we will probably return in a better season.

Disliked: The farm track from the main road to the site has to be driven carefully, take your time and you will arrive in one piece, drive like an idiot and you will lose your van or parts off it.

Liked: Lovely peaceful site off the beaten track. We were on a gravel pitch for one night which was perfect for our awning so we didn’t get muddy. Good for walking the dogs nearby. Clean shower and toilet and plenty of hot water in the shower. The owner was very welcoming. We would stay again. Thank you.

Liked: Good location, dark sky, great for seeing stars. Owner is friendly

Disliked: Very dirty tired facilities. Site looks nothing like the photos, everything overgrown, grass hasnt been cut in months. Only 1 shower for all the tourers, which was blocked, i ended up plunging it myself, no pot washing facilities. Hot water for hand basins barely warm. Windows in toilets all broken latches and wont shut, including shower window, lights on all the time, not on sensors so the block is full of flies and insects. Road leading to site is extremely potholed, my friends van suffered damage to it. It seems like owners have lost interest in it really.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: A really quite location with nothing but nature all around. The site is at a top of a farm track. Taken slowly is not a problem. We tow a small car behind us and we had no problem getting up and down the track. There are the normal sounds you expect from farms as this is a working farm and the only other sound is from your fellow campers. Pitches are grass/hardstanding cross with a few pitches just being hard standing. Very clean toilet and showers. Only real problem is there is only on hand basin. Not a major issue as most vans have their own facilities. This would not be a great place for families with children as there is nothing for children to do. If you want to get away from everything including overspill light from towns and cities this is just the place. When they say bring a torch, you really do need good one as its pitch dark at night. We love it and will be back

Disliked: Nothing
