General

  • Spacious farm site 20 minutes’ drive from Galloway Forest Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Newton Stewart and 25 minutes from Stranraer
  • Animal encounters, off-site pony trekking centre, dark-sky stargazing

Lochs and castles, stanes and lush landscapes… it doesn’t get much more Scottish than this. If hols living out romantic visions of Scotland appeal, get along to Balloch O’Dee Campsite, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the Dumfries and Galloway town of Newton Stewart.

The farm site is well placed for active forays out and about: it's a 20-minute car journey to Galloway Forest Park, where there are trails to follow, deer, goats and birds to spot. Mountain bikers are well placed here too, with not one but two 7stanes centres (Glentrool and Kirroughtree) within 30 minutes of base.

Explores can start directly from site as well, as there are plenty of tracks through this scenic bit of countryside, and the pony trekking centre operated by the site owners (five minutes away) will bring mounts to the site entrance.

Fans of the equines can take their interactions a step or two further by chipping in on mucking out, grooming and pampering, while the rest of the family confines themselves to sharing the occasional shower with the (very) free range hens. Evenings can be spent together around the firepit, looking up at the stars that are easy to see thanks to Galloway Forest Park’s Dark Sky Reserve status.

Please note

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

We had a wonderful stay at Balloch O'Dee campsite. The environment created by the hosts was a relaxed, open, friendly and welcoming space to camp and explore. The views of surrounding hills were expansive and beautiful. Unique and personal touches were evidenced by the owner doing the daily rounds making sure that all campers were happy campers, the thoughtful signage and well-decorated communal areas, and the free-roaming chickens (and chicks!) which brought delight to kids and big kids alike. The facilities were well-presented and had everything you need according to the listing on Pitchup.com. The fire pits were great and featured handmade barbeque stands forged from old horse-shoes. There were communal under-cover areas for the off-chance of the Scottish weather living up to its reputation. Logs were available on site for a fiver a bag and burned well. Take your own firelighters though. Location was great, easy access to A75 and Galloway Forest Park. Spot on. Really enjoyed our stay and will certainly be returning!!! :)

We loved the campsite - so chilled, peaceful and relaxing. Everything about it is beautifully built and thought out. From the toilets and showers to the two young people coming round on a quad bike trailer to collect rubbish. Lots of animals around - chickens, dogs, ponies. Plenty of fire pits dotted around which was great as the evenings got chilly. Such a beautiful location and super friendly people.

    Disliked:

The only downside to the lovely remote location is the lack of mobile phone signal. Make sure you have done all your essential communications about a mile before you arrive where the signal is fine - then enjoy being offline!

From the manager...

Thank you guys, appreciate your enthusiasm for our strange little place x

Nothing to dislike but take hard ground tent pegs as we struggled to get our pegs in and bought extra hard ones from the local shop in Newton Stewart.

From the manager...

Cheers folks, glad you enjoyed it. Sorry about the pegs!

Local attractions

Anyone drawn here by the possibility of active stays will be well chuffed by proximity to Laggan Outdoor half an hour’s drive away where there are zipwires to zoom along, archery to perfect, Segways to zip around on and slingshots for flinging self and friends through the air. Prefer splashier days? It’s 50 minutes to Galloway Activity Centre to have a go at watersports (and mountain biking and climbing).

Other watery options are much closer at hand too – the nearest beach (Sandhead) is about 25 minutes from the site, as is the coastal/loch-side town of Stranraer. Stick around Stranraer to explore the handful of museums, take a turn on the boating lake and visit the Castle of St John.

Literary types should make the next chapter a stop at Wigtown – designated Scotland’s National Book Town – where well-timed stays should coincide with the annual book festival.

For a taste of that classic image of Scotland, make sure to round out stays with a tour of the ruined Threave Castle, the Edwardian Broughton House and Garden (the one-time home of artist EA Hornel), and the hulking, stunning Culzean Castle, all between 45 minutes and an hour and 15 minutes from base.
