General

  • Peaceful rural site in the grounds of a spiritual retreat centre
  • A 15-minute drive from Glastonbury; 25 minutes from Wookey Hole
  • Yoga classes, fire bowls and tours available on site; pub a mile away

EarthSpirit is a rural retreat within the grounds of Somerset’s award-winning Earth Spirit Centre, in the village of Compton Dundon between Somerton and Street (each of which is about 10 minutes’ drive away).

As the name suggests, this is something of a spiritual place – it’s five miles from Glastonbury and within the ‘temenos’ (sacred area) of Avalon that stretches out from the legendary town. If you’d like to find out more about this special area, there's usually someone around that will chat to you about the legends of Avalon or organise a group tour to some of the key sites nearby.

There’s plenty of space to wander around and soak up the vibes at this centre, whose 17th-century buildings sit within seven acres of fields and gardens. If you’d like to stroll a little further, venture out to one of the nature reserves just next to the estate and amble around the village to see the 1,800-year-old yew tree in the church cemetery. The site is also within the Somerset Levels so there are plenty of scenic walks nearby too.

Back at base, guests at this peaceful site have access to low-key facilities including compost toilets, eco showers and fire bowls to gather round of an evening. There are often yoga classes and talks to join in with (although the owners also recommend a trip to the local pub, a mile away…)

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

staff very helpful when we arrived. the site was in a lovely setting, plenty of walks, the shower block was clean and the water lovely and hot but not all the time it was a bit hit and miss lol

    Disliked:

this site is earth friendly which i totally agree with the compost toilet block, but for health reasons not sure if the washing up/hand washing basin right next to it is a very good idea, surely this should be so any metres apart and no hot tape.
there was a dog running around barking which looked like was going to bite but the lady said on a number of times the dogs just pretends to bite which i feel is not good as there are children playing plus the dog can poo anywhere it likes even where people pitch their tents, i then got a bag to pick it up but it was rather runny and had worms which it not good, we did try to found someone but couldnt but we did feel if we mentioned this, this to them wouldnt be a problem

Great information prior to arrival from the site manager Karen, and a warm welcome from her and Fran also, including making special allowance for me arriving outside of the normal time and providing loads of useful local information for my stay. The site operates usually as a spiritual retreat and they have started offering camping outside of the general business, which is a great option during current times to keep the cash coming in!. I stayed in the lower garden, which was a great space among small trees and also containing a sacred tree circle, and basic facilities including compostable toilets and sink/drinking water. However, I also had 24 hours access to the main residential accommodation WC and shower a stones throw away, which was kept spotless throughout and always had hot running water. The centre is in a great location, with some good local peaks to walk very close by giving fantastic views of the levels, and over to the Tor, and within very easy reach of Glastonbury (15 mins or so) and Cheddar Gorge (about 30 mins) to name a couple. On site there is also a spa facility (not open yet while I was there so check), and beautiful gardens to just sit and chill out in, plus plenty of free parking. Site is chilled about camp fires, cooking etc, they pretty much just let everyone get on with it.

    Disliked:

I loved the quiet location, spiritual centre and space. Staff were friendly and helpful, with loads of different accommodation options. Even though I was just solo camping I would definitely consider returning with family and/or friends at some point, and would also be tempted to look at some of the activities/courses on offer. Accommodation wise it's worth calling first to talk about the different options and areas that are available, as some are more noisy than others depending on what is going on at the time.

The only thing I would say is that because the pitches weren't more 'set out', I ended up not having a very peaceful second/third night as had some neighbours who decided to pitch up pretty close to me. This didn't affect my enjoyment overall, but I'd gone away for a couple of quiet nights so a little more obvious spaces between pitches would have been helpful. Also, I wasn't really sure where I should be washing up dishes and disposing of rubbish as there were no specific camping facilities for this, but these are minor teething issues as the centre is just starting the third party camping thing, and in my opinion the place has great potential and staff. Good luck to them!
