The Gaggle of Geese: Garden and barbecue shack

General

  • Pub site over five acres in the village of Buckland Newton
  • Half an hour's drive from beaches and the Jurassic Coast
  • Homemade meals and local beers, plus barbecue and pizza oven in summer

Walkers, riders, fishing folk, dog owners, family groups… all will want to take a gander at The Gaggle of Geese, a friendly country pub in the little village of Buckland Newton.

This is a place that’s mighty well located for all sorts of Dorset days out – it’s in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for all your country pursuits, 20 minutes’ drive from the historic market town of Dorchester and half an hour from the county’s stunning coastline. On top of that, those on family hols may like to note that a drive of less that 45 minutes offers up all sorts of ways to entertain/wear out the small sorts – animal parks, fossil hunting, watersports…

It’s not all about location though – the pub’s a rather fine destination in its own right. Five fab acres of peaceful fields, an orchard and a pleasingly sizeable beer garden make up the outside space, while inside’s all comfy corners and a warm welcome for all (nippers and dogs included). Up for a bit more activity? Skip over to the skittle alley or check the events list to see if there are any quiz nights, wine tastings or live music afternoons scheduled.

And you’ll be needing eats and drinks of course... homemade pub classics can be washed down with local beers and ciders; summer nights often see action out at the barbecue shack and wood-fired pizza oven too. Barbecues and campfires are welcome if you’d rather go the DIY route.

Please note

Woodpeckers every day, our own robin, pheasants, horses clippety clopping in the adjoining lane, very varied morning chorus, goats, 2 stoats running about 6-7 metres from the tent, very filling evening meals in the pub, lovely local walk, delicious pastries on Saturday morning, chiming local church bell very interesting community plant sale in the pub car park, so cute and amazing dog Aggie which made the kids just want a dog more and more. Also, we enjoyed playing the crazy golf but there were a few arguments with the kids on who won. Lastly Sarah and Simon were such accommodating hosts and their son Noah was just adorable.

Our favourite review of the year so far! Love that even the stoats get a mention :)

Look forward to seeing you again soon

Very peaceful and quiet, clean toilets and showers, very friendly. Great to have goats, crazy golf, football for children, looking forward to coming back when the play bus is open! Loved that it was in a lovely quiet village and so close to open fields for walks. Food was great in the pub, all staff were very helpful and friendly! Loved the pop up bakery on Saturday morning!

Slightly disappointed that we were told over email a fire pit would be £5 then when asked on the day it was an extra £5 for the logs, that could have been told to us when we asked before our stay.

The Gaggle of Geese was a wonderful choice for camping. Peaceful, flat camping ground, new toilet facilities and washing up. The site owners were very welcoming and helpful.
The pub provided a lovely beer garden, very spacious and friendly goats. We had a lovely Sunday lunch.
The Cerne Abbas giant was 1 1/2 hours walk away through the best of Dorset countryside.
Would definitely recommend and hope to be back for some of the entertainment evenings listed through the summer.

Lovely site with great beer garden and safe space for the kids who were kept amused by the goats and mini golf. Clean facilities and warm welcome from the owners who clearly work very hard in making this such a special place. Shame we weren’t there for the pop up bakery so will definitely have to go back!

No issues. Really good and friendly communication prior to arrriving.
Nice flat pitch and plenty of choice. Large area available.
Very warm welcome upon arrival and pretty good and not expensive evening meal, Super generous helping of pastries baked for breakfast the next day. Pub not open in morning until 1130 but I went to nearby local village post office shop and had a nice coffee with my pastry.
Passed the shower test with flying colours - really good and generous space.
Seemed good for children/families - mini gold, play bus, friendly goats.
Best campsite of the three I stayed in on my tour.
COVID complaince done well and properly.

    Disliked:

Only possible issue is option for breakfast in morning but this might only be lacking because of COVID & the pasties alternative offering was pretty good.

Clean undercover facilities for washing dishes. Pub/bar meals available. Stayed here as near to lots of good walking routes including cerne abbas giant. Would definately stay again post covid restrictions I imagine will be even better. No WiFi or signal in camping field (fine with me!).

Local attractions

Country wanderings aplenty await around here – there are heaps of places for walks both short and lengthy in the surrounding Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A popular ramble from the pub is the four-mile route to the Cerne Abbas Giant (indeed a sizeable chap at 55 metres long – potential pub quiz answer...?)

Horseback hacks can be had from several stables within half an hour, and there’s a fab coarse fishery with 10 lakes (10!) five minutes’ drive away. Want a bit more oomph in your outings? Head to Henley Hillbillies (five minutes’ drive) for days zooming about on quad bikes or in hovercrafts or souped-up Minis.

Need nipper-pleasing days out? Take your (or more likely their) pick from The Dinosaur Museum (20 minutes), Monkey World (half an hour), the Tank Museum (half an hour), the Sea Life adventure park (40 minutes), Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (40 minutes)… or head to the coast for beach days in Weymouth (40 minutes), watersports at Lulworth Cove (45 minutes) or fossil hunts in Kimmeridge (50 minutes).

Must see

  • Hardy's Birthplace (8.2 miles)
  • Mapperton House & Gardens (12.0 miles)
  • The Tank Museum (13.5 miles)
