Chettle Campsite

General

  • Quiet, simple and spacious site in rural Dorset surroundings
  • In the small village of Chettle; 10 minutes' drive to Blandford Forum
  • A well-stocked shop, modern restaurant and pub all within a short walk

Sitting on the outskirts of a quiet village, Chettle Campsite sits in and around an orchard and has an abundance of space and immediate access to the rolling Dorset downlands. This is a truly rustic campsite best suited to those that love the outdoors, so if you're keen to cook over an open fire and are happy using a compost loo, this place will be right up your street. Simply put, Chettle Campsite is a place for more hardy campers and glampers looking for a memorable off-grid experience.

The site adjoins the well-known Jubilee Way (ideal for exercising your canine chum, should you bring one) and is great for exploring Cranborne Chase and the Chalke Valley, both of which are crisscrossed with footpaths. The Castleman Hotel restaurant (open for dinner six nights a week and for lunch four days a week) is close by too, while an award-winning pub, The Museum Inn, is roughly 30 minutes' walk away through the fields in Farnham, the neighbouring village to Chettle.

Chettle itself has a fantastically well-stocked shop five minutes' walk away, where you can pick up treats for the breakfast frying pan, wine or ice to keep it all cool. There's also a large communal firepit at the centre of the site, where you can get together with other guests and relax over a glass of whatever you fancy.

If you need protection from the elements (or just somewhere to sit), get comfortable in the on-site 'library', a sheltered space where you can snooze on a sofa or relax on a hay bale with a good book.

The site's well-maintained facilities are simple – eco-composting toilets, showers and washing-up sinks. Music and instruments are not discouraged but need to be kept at a respectful level; quiet hours apply after 10pm. A warden is on hand overnight to make sure that the site remains peaceful

Loved the grounds, location, tent, cooking kit provided, fire pit, eco toilets, showers and washing up facilities. Beds are comfortable for a camping experience. Location was perfect for the Dorset Steam Fair. Village shop had everything you need. Paulie the Site Manager was very attentive and helped us over a technical issue where by Pitch up had not notified of our confirmed booking. Not a problem though it was all sorted.

Staff - Paulie could not have been more helpful. When our airbed burst on a Sunday evening - Paulie provided a high quality comfy replacement at no extra charge.
Chase - the canine site manager who rarely leaves Paulie's side.
Quirkiness - the campsite reflects the quirky feel of Chettle village.
Space - tons of unregulated space around our bell tent.
    Atmosphere - relaxed and peaceful.
Yoga - making good use of the massive reading tent.

    Disliked:

water related facilities - have seen better on other pop-up campsites.

Paul and his sidekick (didn't catch his name) were really friendly and helpful.
There are lots of things to do locally and a very well stocked shop just a few minutes walk away.
I wasn't sure about writing this review as I'd actually like to keep it my little secret.

I liked the bell tent, it was spacious and it lit up in the evenings with little solar powered fairy lights. A good distance was between the bell tent and the fire pit. The picnic table was a god send, as our has broken the previous summer. I needed this for making my baby's bottles in the morning.

    Disliked:

The showers having an open top and have not been made well enough, there are gaps where you can been seen naked. I could see my children waiting outside by the buggy with the baby, so if I could see out, I can be seen inside. On the last day there was a caravan opposite the showers. I don't think campers should be able to pitch in direct eye sight of the showers, as it could breach privacy.

All four showers I think need to have hot water, not two without hot water. There needs to be comfort when your away camping/on holiday. hot showers is one of them.

We had the most amazing stay at Chettle. The campsite is lovely and in a very rural setting with amazing views. Ali who was on hand for anything we needed was lovely, very friendly and very relaxed. The facilities are great and provide everything you need. The bell tent we stayed in was perfect, spacious, clean and had lovely touches such as cooking equipment and blankets provided. We cooked over our firepit every night and sat out under the stars enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. The location is great for not only the attractions of Dorset but also the New Forest and a short walk down a lovely leafy track is the village shop which has quite literally everything you could want and more. We will definitely be coming back!

VERY clean. VERY comfortable. Showers were really nice, warm/hot. Clean washing facilities. Toilets well maintained. Me and my two sons had a great stay, as a single parent the clean well maintained facilities just made my life easier and gave me more time to spend with my son's while RELAXED. The local shop is a god send and the heart beat of the local community. Most all people locally imediatley say hello and engage in good conversation and are happy. Genuinely happy to see you. All in all we lived our stay. Ali the site manager was attentive while giving as much privacy to you as possible. She was very well mannered and made us feel very welcome. We will no doubt head back to this campsite when we visit Dorset again.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike. Maybe a few to many wasps but hey ho. It's a hot summer and to be expected. NO INSECT PROBLEMS at this site otherwise. Not a single bite had by all 3 of us.

Directions

Approaching Chettle from the A354, you will see signposts for Chettle Shop and The Castleman. Turn into the village, passing both the shop and the Castleman on your left. Follow the road around a sharp right-hand bend. The site entrance is on the right after approximately 100 yards. Please enter the site slowly, turning left and following the one-way system. Only drive on the perimeter track, not on the long grass.

Approaching Chettle from the north via Common Drove, Royal Tollard, or Farnham you will find yourselves on Millers Lane. There is a small crossroads from which the Campsite is signposted. Signposts for the campsite are on your right. Follow this road (which takes a sharp left after 0.25 miles) until you see the signposted campsite entrance on your left. Please enter the site via the left-hand lane.
