Charisworth Farm: View south

General

  • Peaceful site in remote countryside among grassy fields and woodland
  • Less than 10 mins’ drive to North Dorset Trailway walks, cycle rides
  • Firepits, lots of animals and spacious green areas for kids to play

Book a stay at Charisworth Farm for rural roams and animal antics: this site in the middle of the Dorset countryside is home to domesticated creatures ranging from cows, pigs and sheep to chicken, geese and horses – plus lots of local wildlife like deer and birds…

When not getting up close and personal with critters you can rest in grassland among trees at this leafy park, with plenty of space for adults to unwind while the children play. In the local area, walking and cycling can be had on the countryside bridleways – including on the North Dorset Trailway that runs from Poole to Sturminster Newton less than 10 minutes’ drive away.

In the evenings this site’s all about peaceful, quiet times around the firepit (music and parties aren’t permitted), with the added bonus of a quiet bar serving draught lager and cider, spirits and soft drinks on Friday nights. Every May Bank Holiday it gets a little livelier as it hosts the family-friendly charity event Teddy Rocks Festival.

Not here during the festivities? Amusement is still all around: an extreme-sports centre is just over a five-minute drive away for quad biking and paintballing and you can head over to the town of Blandford Forum (around 10 minutes by car) to browse the shops or check out the military communications and fashion museums.

If you’ve not got your fill of cute creatures, even more are at Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (20 minutes’ drive) away where you can seeing poorly primates being rehabilitated.

For sandy times instead, the beaches of Sandbanks and Studland are both a 40-minute drive from the site.

Lovely quiet little farm. We loved the cows at the bottom on the field. The tent was clean, air beds comfy, toilets were clean, shower was just a porta shower, but warm water. The farmer was helpful.

We enjoyed five days at Charisworth Farm.
The bell tent was spacious (for the four of us), clean and of good quality.
The farm sits in the most picturesque setting with a view of rolling green hills and huge mature trees. Very peaceful.
Great facilities including a communal fridge/freezer and tea/coffee station.
The Friday evening event of draught beer and BBQ was lovely and created a nice atmosphere.
I would definitely recommend this campsite to anyone - also plenty of space if anyone wished to camp with own tent.

We stayed in one of their bell tents for the weekend and had a really nice weekend.
The bell tent came supplied with air beds, the usual blue ones you see in any camping shop. The tents were well spaced out across the site, some are grouped together which would be ideal if going with another family or two.
Its a peaceful site in an idyllic setting amongst a working farm with great views.
Bell tent and camping pitches are all level.
There is a wooded area with a rope swing which my kids really enjoyed playing in.
They do farm tours at 10AM for a small fee.
On Fridays they open a bar built into the one of the barns and have a BBQ. Plenty of seating and a nice atmosphere.
There is a marquee at the top of the field with a boiler and tea/coffee making facilities in it.
    Owners are helpful and friendly.
You are allowed fire pits and they sell fire wood on site.

A few recent reviews I read before booking here had criticised a few points which I didn't find a problem...
The new washing up station does have hot water and is good.
The new block of toilets are nice and I always found them clean.
The reception is next to the top field entrance (this is also the bar) Mobile numbers are on the sign. Nobody was there when we arrived, however someone answered the phone number straight away and was there within a minute.
The road junction at the main road is not a problem. Yes you are joining an "A" road but is on a reasonably straight section and you can see a decent distance in both directions.
The two showers are not the most glamorous but they did do the job. This is the only thing I would say could be improved but they certainly would not put me off coming back.

Local attractions

Dorset is known for its historic market towns like Wareham, a spot set beside the River Frome. Travel for 20 minutes to reach this destination with its Saxon walls then get out into the countryside at the Blue Pool former clay quarry filled in with turquoise water.

Wimborne’s another town worth a punt: turn up here for the minster and market (25 minutes drive) or travel the same distance to Dorchester for a teddy bear museum, writer Thomas Hardy’s old 19th-century house and the Maiden Castle ancient hillfort.

Poole (half an hour) also has historic buildings to check out, especially in the Old Town with its Georgian houses and at Poole Museum’s medieval Scaplen’s Court. Take boats to Brownsea Island from the harbour for woodland paths from which to see rare red squirrels bounding around.

For old vehicles instead of buildings and wildlife, The Tank Museum in Bovington Camp with displays of armoured fighting vehicles is 20 minutes away.

Must see

  • Kingston Lacy House and Gardens (6.9 miles)
  • Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (8.0 miles)
  • The Tank Museum (8.4 miles)

  • White Mill (5.8 miles)
