Norton Farm: Camping manager Michelle feeding the lambs

General

  • Spacious site on a family farm with great Devon/Cornwall views
  • A 15-minute drive from Bude and 20 minutes from several beaches
  • Large pitches with logs and kindling to buy for campfires

Heading for some peaceful quality time in the Devon countryside? Norton Farm is a working family farm with splendid views over the Devon and Cornwall countryside… and 20 minutes' drive from several beaches, you'll be in the genuine countryside here, as the farm breeds two types of pedigree sheep and rears dairy farm cattle too.

Simply roll up, pick a spot and park beside your pitch. There are 15 acres of level or gently sloping grassy fields to choose from. Set up down a private lane away from the noise of the roads and light pollution (bring a torch), there's a real connection to the outdoors at this site – not forgetting the open skies for stargazing or the sunsets that roll in after dark.

With pitches nicely spaced out, you'll have plenty of space and peace, and you're welcome to bring along a barbecue for eats as you relax. Handily, there are kindling packs including straw and kindling wood sold on site, as well as buckets of split logs for those with wood-burning barbecues.

This simple family-run pop-up site has all the essential facilities covered, including portaloos and cold running mains water, plus washing-up sinks to take care of any pots and pans. There are shower facilities on site in a converted horse trailer, or you're welcome to bring your own solar shower and privacy tent if you so desire. Need some juice for your gadgets? Laptop and phone chargers are available to hire if you've forgotten your own.

When you're ready to visit the world again or you fancy sampling some real ales, it's a 25-minute walk from the farm gates to the nearest pub or you could pick a spot to rest up somewhere in Bude (a 15-minute drive away for beaches and watersports).

Please note

There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Minimum spacing of 10 metres between pitches.

Units heavier than 3500 kg are not allowed.

Peace and quiet, and the space between campers was immense (not many campers this week).

Michelle, the 'landlord', was lovely too, and super accommodating. She genuinely seemed to want us to have the best time possible.

    Disliked:

The portaloos weren't pleasant on a couple of the days (out of seven), and the lack of any kind of shop was a bit of an inconvenience.

The two fields are also quite sloped, so if you miss out on the topmost (flat) pitches, you're probably going to be on an angle.

Great green/wild site (which means no electricity), Michelle goes above and beyond to help you. Very clean peaceful site and toilets (portaloos) are kept clean too with great handwashing facilities, horsebox shower is amazing and the breakfasts which Michelle will bring to your tent are reasonable and lovely if you want them.

    Disliked:

Perhaps as the business grows needs toilet facilities the second field as the business grows.

  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

This campsite is run by organised and helpful owners. The campsite is surrounded by beautiful countryside views and close to children's activities in Bude (sea pool and soft play). The blue rental tent is very big and fitted 6 of us in with space for luggage.
There is a Lidl and Morrisons 10 minutes drive away.
The field is spacious with plenty of room for children to play.

    Disliked:

There were lots of wasps when we visited which made the children very anxious, they saw me stung twice and one of the children was stung. It is an eco-friendly campsite where no pesticides are used. I think there may have been a nest near to the tent as they were everywhere.

From the manager...

So glad you and your children enjoyed the campsite and the hire tent - we do have lots of space here!

Local attractions

From paddling around the sea pool to getting down to watersports (surfing, kayaking or coasteering, anyone?) on Summerleaze Beach (20 minutes' drive), it’s simple to get stuck into activities in and out of the sea in Bude (15 minutes). On land, the 19th-century castle has an art gallery or the coastal paths has its own splendid scenes.

For more chilled-out bays, there’s a two-mile walk between the surfing haven at Crooklets Beach (20 minutes) and the National Trust’s Sandymouth Bay Beach (20 minutes). Look out for a shipwreck and the little burrows of sandcastle worms on your route.

How about more activities on the water? Tamar Lakes (20 minutes) is another spot popular with sailors and watersports fans, but also a nice place for a lakeside stroll, cycle or getting out the binoculars (count the different species of water birds, if you may).

If the kids are asking after some adventures inland, The Milky Way Adventure Park (half an hour) has funfair-style rollercoasters and Hidden Valley (40 minutes) has a maze, light railway and puzzle trails.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (16.0 miles)
  • Tintagel Castle (17.2 miles)
  • Rock Beach (28.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Lawrence House (12.1 miles)
  • Tintagel Old Post Office (17.1 miles)
