  • Small family-run site on a smallholding in Dartmoor National Park
  • Close to River Teign and Two Moors Way; 25 minutes' drive to Exeter
  • Simple pitches with well-kept facilities, plus play area and hammocks
Three Hares Campsite is a small family-run site in the Dartmoor National Park, part of a 25-acre smallholding run by friendly Chinnie and Henry. Simple, secluded and scenic – that’s the style of this little Devon site full of wildflowers and trees and bordering a little stream. It’s got hammocks set up in the willow trees and a small play area with a tree swing for the kids, and welcomes barbecues and campfires (as long as they’re kept off the ground). There’s also fab farm shop five minutes' drive away for top-notch sausages and local veg to grill. There’s much to do in the surrounding area, whether you’re planning hikes on the Two Moors Way, bike rides on the Wray Valley Trail or Granite Way, kayaking, swimming and climbing around the River Teign or simply sampling all the Devon cream teas you can possibly manage. Exeter’s about a 25-minute drive away for a city fix, and you can get to beach days within about 40 minutes. This is a simple and eco-friendly site but all the necessary facilities are in place: guests have access to fresh water, hot (and strong) showers, flushing toilets, a chemical waste point and a lovely timber-framed washing-up area. Sorry, but no dogs are allowed on site as it has sheep for neighbours.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Had a lovely stay, was well signposted from the road, easy to find. Beautifully quiet and plenty of space. Despite it having rained all day the site wasn't boggy and my small car had no trouble. Plenty of information when visiting reception, was self check in as I had a non electric pitch. Very clean and well maintained bathrooms, showers and dishes area. Shower was lovely and hot. Plenty of accessible water spots. Overall very happy, felt very safe on site and wish I'd had time to stay longer!

Disliked: Small argument with an angry goose!

Liked: Lovely stay here. My boys loved it! There was quite a few things to do: hammocks, swings to name a few. Chinnie and family were lovely, checking in on us getting us, getting fresh wood and kindling. Overall, we loved the stay and we were sad to leave. THANK YOU FOR HAVING US ;)

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Another fantastic stay at Three Hares. This time I stayed alone whilst my son visited his father (he joined me on the last night) so I can safely say this site is suitable for solo travellers and for families. It has the rustic charm of almost wild camping, with the wonderful additions of the best showers I've experienced camping (hot and plentiful - no annoying buttons to keep pressing!) washing up facilities, hammocks to relax in and a reception area with a fridge, charging facilities, lots of local info and some gorgeous home grown produce and home made items. It really has everything. You can buy a wheelbarrow (!) of wood for £5 and Henry was super kind this year and gave me a large bucket of kindling too. You can also hire fire pits for £3.50 although I took my own. They really have got Three Hares spot on - wild, in nature, with home comforts. Chinnie and Henry are lovely, as is their resident goose Gander. When we visited last year there were 2 Geese - Goosie & Gander. Gander sadly lost Goosie to a fox this year so was a bit out of sorts, but we loved him so much - nearly as much as he loved his reflection in the car! (It makes him feel like he has his mate back) Three Hares is wonderful, I almost don't want to gush too much as it feels like a gem of a secret at the moment. But Chinnie and Henry deserve every success here. Can't wait to return next year. Amy x

From the manager: Gander the goose is a much loved addition to our campsite but we do understand that a free range goose isn't everyones cup of tea. Apologies for the poo but we are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us apart from that!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I brought my 11 year old nephew for a nights camping at Three Hares. It felt safe and relaxed and at the same time we had eniugh space to feel like we had a bit of wild camp experience. We were next to a stream at one end of the site and he enjoyed looking for blackberries and collecting twigs to make a small fire. It was perfectly placed for a visit to Fingles Bridge where we walked, climbed over river rocks to reach the beach and had the most thrilling cold swim of the year. It was the perfect 24 hour get-away.

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: An absolutely beautiful site with lovely facilities, my daughter loved dancing in the reception room and checking to see if any new delicious goodies had arrived in the basket (we purchased eggs and a cucumber). I loved the outdoor washing up area, tempted to make myself one at home as somehow it felt so much more peaceful and less of a chore washing up in that gorgeous outdoor space! Clean, warm and welcoming bathrooms were pleasant to use and the fire pits, hammocks, swings and play items were a wonderful surprise bonus! It had such a family feel and we were sad we had only booked for a few nights. As my daughter said on our last day, we were very sad to leave and would have liked to stay forever! We will most certainly be coming back again, and have already recommended it to several friends!
