Owl Valley Glamping: View of the bell tent

General

  • Small peaceful site on a private nature reserve in north Devon
  • Two miles from Bideford and within 10 minutes of award-winning beaches
  • Within easy reach of the Tarka Trail

Want to get away from the chaos of modern life without sacrificing too many of your creature comforts? At Owl Valley Glamping, a peaceful site less than two miles from the town of Bideford in north Devon, you get the best of both worlds: no internet, no electricity – just somewhere comfy to spend your break. What a hoot.

Owl Valley is paradise for walkers, nature spotters and sand fans: the site is a 10-minute drive from the beach at Westward Ho! and under an hour from the north Devon coast. The 32-mile traffic-free Tarka Trail for walkers and cyclists is within easy reach, passing through nearby Bideford, and there are plenty of walks along the South West Coast Path too.

Back on site, explore the private nature reserve that you’ll be calling home during your stay: wander through the woodlands, sit on the banks of the pond or stream and, at all times, keep your eyes peeled for wildflowers, butterflies, woodland birds and the occasional deer.

When it's time for dinner, fire up your barbecue or get that campfire going – you can pick up supplies and essentials in Bideford, or just skip cooking altogether and have a bite at one of the quayside town’s restaurants.

Don’t expect to be bingeing Netflix in the evenings – instead, kick back and turn your gaze to the stars, unwinding with the sounds of owls’ hooting and the stream running through the site playing in your ears.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Chris and family were fantastic from initial emails till the very end of our stay. The whole family made our stay really comfortable and welcome, the little things like a full and well equipped kitchen. Fresh linen on arrival and bringing our luggage from the car park. (overpacked through absolute excitement) The hot tub being pre heated when we came back from our day trips, a lovely touch. Steve’s shack that kept our older kids entertained. It’s a brilliant and magical getaway in the forest. We can’t wait to go back.

    Wow what a secret hideaway!!

We had the most wonderful few days here! Could have lockdown for life! The small touches in and outside the cabin were appreciated! They’ve thought of everything (even a loo seat that doesn't get cold).

Hot shower and wood fire tub that was easy to use and heats up perfectly. All you could need in outdoor kitchen - utensils, pots pans etc, double gas burner, BBQ with coals.

Fabulous location, stream literally a stones throw away from the cabin, you can hear the running water, sitting in the hot tub with the stars shinning down it was bliss.

Chris was the most caring and hospitable host. We can’t wait to come back!!

Pretty much everything - accommodating hosts, beautiful setting, comfortable camping. Little touches made a big difference and Chris encouraged us to make use of these, eg plenty of candles to use, extra firefighters and kindling (small fee), solar powered fairy lights, hot water bottles (especially welcome in October!), pens, paper and cards / board games, cool box, wind up torches. Kids loved the games shack with pool and darts, we used the communal cooking facilities and ate here in the evening. Toasty warm wood burner. The kitchen areas were equipped with every utensil you might need, also washing up liquid, tea towels, oven gloves. Composting loo was great and the bathroom was very clean and nicely decorated while still fitting with the rustic setting. Beds very comfy and warm (even in October!). The site is stunning with lots of nooks and crannies to explore and surprises to come across. Our bags were taken to the tent by quad bike so we didn’t have to lug them there. All in all an amazing stay - the children (7 and 11) are already asking to go back, which we definitely will.

2nd visit to the wonderful secret valley of the owls!! It’s simply beautiful, peaceful and lots of family fun, especially if you book alongside some friends. As well as enjoying your tent, you’ll find a hidden campfire set up in the woods, a pizza oven, boggy ponds to catch (and return) tadpoles, a stream to dam and the wonderful, sociable Parliament hut where you can while away an evening chatting stove-side with candles flickering. We’ll be back!!

Local attractions

If you haven’t had enough of walking from your excursions on the South West Coast Path and Tarka Trail, never fear: Owl Valley is 40 minutes’ drive from Exmoor National Park, where there are plenty of trails and long-distance routes. There’s also canoeing, sea kayaking, fishing, horse riding and mountain biking to get stuck into, and the less active can pay a visit to Dunster Castle, take a trip on the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway funicular or the West Somerset Railway steam train, or bring the kids to Exmoor Zoo or Watermouth Castle Theme Park.

For those who like living at least part of their life on the water, there’s loads to do close to Owl Valley. Have a go at kayaking, body boarding, surfing and rafting in Bideford, or climb aboard a boat in Ilfracombe to spy out dolphins, seals and porpoises on sea safari.

A visit to Clovelly is a must – the stunning seaside village, 20 minutes from Owl Valley, has oodles of character. It’s also entirely traffic free, so you can wander the cobbled streets sharing the roads with donkeys and human-powered sledges, and looking out over Bideford bay.
