  • Site on a working farm in Exmoor National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Barnstaple; Combe Martin beach 15 minutes
  • Large and level camping field with moorland views
With a dramatic Devon setting amid Exmoor National Park views, the camping field at White Causey Farm is run by working farmer Jake. You’ll see him out and about during the day with his faithful dog Jill, and there’s little else to disturb your peace except grazing cows and sheep, and fields full of calves and lambs in spring. A site with spacious plots, parking on pitch and a toilet block, this is a peaceful spot for family holidays, with plenty for everyone – including the dog – to do. There are loads of footpaths and cycle tracks close by, from easy strolls around Whistland Pound Reservoir to more demanding days out along the coastal Tarka Trail. Youngsters can let off steam running around the fields or on Combe Martin beach, and there are surfing waves at Woolacombe or Croyde for older kids. And if they’ve all behaved, you may like to treat them to a day out at Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park or Exmoor Zoo, both less than 15 minutes away. If you need to do a big shop, there are large supermarkets 20 minutes away in Barnstaple, otherwise you can walk across the fields to the handy farm shop for your supplies. Don’t forget local meat to grill on the barbecue (bring one from home) – and if you don’t feel like cooking in the evening, there are plenty of cosy pubs nearby.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Stayed for 2 nights in my Bongo van with my sister to do some local Geocaching. This site was quiet and clean and perfect for a basic no thrills camp. The toilet and shower stable were clean and the water was hot. The washing up room had everything needed and a toaster (bonus). We were not lucky with the weather but we were lucky with finding this site. Thank you.

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We came to this site for the Stargazing as it’s in a designated dark skies area. The stargazing was fab! and this lovely little site delivered much more! It was quiet, conveniently located for Combe Martin ( Black and White Chippy- simply the best fish and chips ever!) and most of the North coastline and within half a mile of a wonderful farm shop too. Facilities are rustic but functional. The toilets were clean and the paper replaced often. Showers are decent power showers, so always hot water and the Farmer leaves the lights on so there’s no need to fumble around in the dark. The kitchen has sinks , a fridge, freezer, kettle, microwave and toaster. There are sockets to charge your phones, power packs etc and waste and recycling and bins. The site is pretty level by Devon standards and the ground good. The farmer mowed a large strip to pitch on before our arrival but you can pitch wherever you like. We had a couple of storms on our stay, the farmer kindly came by and made sure we were ok. We needed extra pegs which we found about 20 min drive away in a super camping shop in a garden centre in Ashford, Barnstaple. Barnstaple is the nearest big town with Tescos, Home Bargains, Lidl, B&Q and shops. Traffic can be heavy at rush hour so avoid that if possible. Other places we visited included Dartington Chrystal, several beaches, RHS Rosemore, Arlington Hall, steam train, Cliff railway, Lynton and Lynmouth. There’s still plenty to see. All in all we loved this calm little site, completely quiet, well, except the cockerels and cows which were lovely to listen to a peaceful base to explore from.

Liked: We liked that there were no specific pitch sizes and we could choose where we pitched. The grandchildren had plenty of room to play and run around. Jake, the owner was extremely helpful and went out of his way to see that everything was ok.

Disliked: Hot water for washing up was not great, sometimes couldn’t get it to get hot.

Liked: Farmer Jake was a lovely owner, very friendly and made sure you knew that he was there if you ever needed anything. The location is nice and quiet with sun shining on most of the field throughout the day. The shower, toilet block and wash up room were always clean and tidy. It was great that a fridge and freezer are on site. As well as a kettle, microwave and toaster! Would love to come again.

Local attractions

When (if) you eventually tire of the Exmoor National Park views, you’ll most likely head for the beach. The closest is at Combe Martin (15 minutes' drive), where you can swim in sheltered coves and kayak along the coastline. Surfing fans can hire boards at Saunton Sands and Croyde (both 40 minutes), and you might also like to play golf, go riding or hike the Tarka Trail. Treat the kids to days out at Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park or Exmoor Zoo (less than 15 minutes), then sneak in a bit of culture at Arlington House’s Carriage Museum (five minutes) or sample gourmet goodies in Barnstaple Pannier Market (20 minutes). North Devon has loads of natural beauty too: ancient rock formations and wild goats at the Valley of Rocks (20 minutes), dune-top walks in Woolacombe (30 minutes), or moorland drives to Tarr Steps clapper bridge on the Exe river.
