  • Camping pods on a private 320-acre estate in the High Weald
  • A 20-minute drive to the Bluebell Railway; valleys a short walk away
  • Brewery, guided estate walks, tennis court and iron making available
Be lord or lady of your very own camping pod set on a private, dog-friendly 320-acre estate in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With 20-mile views in either direction across to the South and North Downs, the estate’s based on the watershed of the Ouse and Medway and is likely to leave a lasting impression. Plus, it’s handily 20 miles north of Brighton for seaside days and 35 miles from central London (making it a handy spot for those seeking a quick escape from city life). Lucky guests here have the freedom to access all 320 acres of the Chiddinglye Estate, except the private gardens (which are available by arrangement). You can also sample craft beers, cider and apple juice brewed from the estate orchard at the Missing Link Brewery – the Tap Room (open Thursday through to Sunday) and beer garden are just five minutes’ stroll from the pods. And where else might you visit without leaving the estate? The old Victorian kitchen garden perhaps, where there’s fresh organic produce available. There’s an Iron Age fort and a heritage blacksmith where Simon Summers provides courses on ancient iron making, and the tennis court can be booked on request. Treat yourself to a hike too – it really is a treat, with several marked trails to pick from. If you’d like a guided estate walk, an evening nature walk or a foraging walk, they’re available on a timely basis with ranger Ross Symonds. There are a number of additional wilding projects including restoring a wild swimming area in a stream and creating a new wildflower meadow, plus a renewable energy centre. Chiddinglye is packed with local wildlife, including some of the the Sussex big five: deer (fallow, roe and muntjac), fox, badger, squirrel and rabbit. The sky might feature songbirds, pheasants and birds of prey. There’s also an ancient woodland and pasture, three stands of Californian redwoods and spectacular bluebells in the spring.

Local attractions

A 10-minute walk and you’ll arrive in Happy Valley, an ancient glade with sandstone outcrops. Just further on is Philpots Valley (fondly dubbed the Land That Time Forgot), another splendid spot for walks among sandstone rocks and bryophytes. Where next, must be the next question? The wild 500 acres of botanic gardens at Wakehurst (half an hour’s walk)? Gorgeous Ashdown Forest (15 minutes’ drive)? A rural Sussex steam train ride on the Bluebell Railway (20 minutes), passing by 19th-century stations with staff in period attire? Hever Castle & Gardens (35 minutes) is another historic Sussex spot to set your sights on, with family-friendly activities like archery, boating, a maze and a military museum.
