  • Family-run working farm just to the north of the South Downs
  • A 10-minute drive from Alton or a quarter of an hour from Alresford
  • Meet the animals, hire a firepit and take advantage of the dark skies
Swoop down and pick a plot at Kite View Campsite if you're looking for a roost right in the middle of Hampshire. This quiet spot is set on a family-run working farm a few miles to the north of the South Downs National Park in a location surrounded by arable fields and grazing livestock. This place is all about making the time to do the little things that make a camping stay special, whether that involves booking with the farmers for a meet and greet with the animals, ordering some meat from a local game dealer or hiring a firepit and kindling the flames the old-fashioned way. Set in an elevated location, Kite View Campsite has a front-row seat for stargazing and spotting satellites drifting overhead after dark. In the daytime, its position makes the grounds a great vantage point for wildlife spotting too – kites, buzzards and other birds of prey can frequently be seen soaring overhead, while down on the ground you might spot rabbits, hares and fawn or fallow deer darting through the undergrowth. A number of footpaths can be reached straight from the site, including routes down to the local pub and village stores a mile to the south in Medstead. For more supplies, head down the road to Alton (10 minutes' drive) for supermarkets, shops and takeaways.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Kite View Campsite is a big beautiful open space, away from roads and noise, with the distant sound of owls at night. The ground was well maintained with a gentle slope here and there (so make sure to find a flat spot if you have a tent). When the clouds finally cleared later at night, it was a perfect location for star gazing with low light pollution. Communication with Amy was excellent, who helpfully sent us a map of how to enter the site once we arrived. The toilets were probably the cleanest and most well maintained camp toilets I've seen. There was also fresh drinking water, showers, and a handy washing-up spot with a tube for grey water, and recycling/bins near the entrance. Overall, no complaints at all.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely rural setting whilst not being too far from things to do. Only 20 basic pitches so never feels busy. Everyone is well spaced out so noise is never an issue. No elextric hook up but not an issue for us. Fire pits are allowed and can be provided. Lovely warm welcome. Toilets (portaloos) were very clean.

Disliked: Nothing.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: - friendly owner - lovely pub walking distance with quiet roads & most of the way off road on public footpaths - hot water for dish washing is a great bonus - 2 x portaloo cabins but normal toilet and sinks inside, cleaned regularly and kept stocked with blue roll, loo roll and soap. - 2 x shower rooms kept clean and with enough dry space to not have to tip toe about like other camp sites - hot chocolates were a fun idea - a quiet and calm site - very large covered area with table and chairs in case the rain tries to ruin your plans - small play area for kids and they all seemed very happy - local shops nearby - large tent pitches, assigned before arrival

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great campsite with loads of space and the kids spent hours on the climbing frame (which was close enough that we could see them but far enough that we couldn't hear them!). The farm trip was also fab for the kids, the enjoyed feeding and moving the animals and by nephew is excited about working there when he grows up! Toilets were the best portaloos I've seen in a long time.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (adults only)

Liked: Fabulous little campsite. Pitches were level, clearly numbered, well spaced and very large. Plenty of walks from campsite including to the village pub! Facilities were basic albeit adequate and clean. Owners were really friendly and welcoming. We had ordered some meat and this was delivered to us on arrival with a welcome pack. We stayed here as we were visiting Hattersley Valley Vineyard which, if you like champagne, is amazing and well worth a tour! And we were able to walk there so able to take full advantage of the wine tasting. I can also recommend The Yew Tree for Sunday Lunch which is a 2 min walk from the vineyard. We were blessed with reasonable weather and the other campers were quiet and considerable of others so made for a very pleasant stay.

Disliked: I did not dislike anything about the site.

Liked: Lovely campsite! We got a meet and greet with the animals which the children loved especially George the sheep who stole the show 🤩 Very basic but nice clean facilities; toilets, washing up area etc. Park in the centre of the pitches for all of the kids to mingle and pitches far away from others to have that peaceful space. Both families had a wonderful time. Will not hesitate to come again.

Local attractions

For a car-free jaunt, pick up the Watercress Line steam railway at Medstead and Four Marks station (a mile from base) and take a trip to the pretty town of Alresford (15 minutes' drive), where you can carry on your journey on foot along the scenic Alresford Watercress Trail Circular. After taking in millponds, streams, woodlands and vineyards in Alresford, a 10-minute drive to the south (or half an hour when setting off from site) will take you to the National Trust-run Hinton Ampner Estate, a gorgeous expanse of Hampshire parkland with a small stately home attached. Guests of a literary persuasion should also find many a happy hour hereabouts – this quiet agricultural landscape makes an excellent backdrop for relaxed reading sessions, while less than 10 minutes' drive away you’ll come across Jane Austen's House in the village of Chawton. Inspired and ready to stock up on reading material? Petersfield (25 minutes) has a thriving collection of bookshops, while over in Winchester (25 minutes) you can pick up well-thumbed paperbacks for bargain prices in the cathedral close at weekends.
