  • Exclusive-use glamping site in a former horse paddock with green views
  • A five-minute drive to London Stansted Airport and 15 to Elsenham
  • Direct links to Cambridge and London by train from the local village
Gemini Camp’s worth booking whatever your horoscope says: this park’s in a private six-acre nature reserve, so you can have the wildlife-rich Essex surroundings and fresh air all to yourself, perhaps as an extension of a hol before or after a flight out of London Stansted Airport a five-minute drive away...? The off-grid stays at this hideaway in a private nature reserve are in a cosy cabin with a comfortable double bed, woodburner, cooking and washing facilities – including an eco toilet and shower. The cabin has lovely views out across the greenery-filled former horse paddock whichever way you turn. Settled in comfortably to watch planes swooping across the skies overhead then realised you’ve left something behind at home? The village of Elsenham with its local shop and pub is a 15-minute drive (or half an hour walk away on a car-free trail) for your essentials and the nine-hole course and gym at Golf World Stansted under a 10-minute walk also has a bar in the clubhouse serving food and drink if it’s sustenance you’re after. Other villages to visit in this rural area include Stansted Mountfitchet (15 minutes away), home to historical hotspots like Mountfitchet Castle, a reconstructed Norman settlement and a toy museum, along with pretty Thaxted (also 15 minutes) and Finchingfield (25 minutes). Back in Elsenham, a mainline railway station means you can also hit up the big cities thanks to direct services to Cambridge (half an hour) and London (55 minutes).

Local attractions

For gentle hikes while in this part of south east Essex, head to the National Trust-protected Hatfield Forest (15 minutes' drive) to wander lakeside or beneath the boughs of 1,200-year-old trees in a medieval-era hunting woodland; alternatively, take a 20-minute trip to Rushy Mead nature reserve for ambles along the bank of the River Stort. You can stretch the legs around the 17th-century grounds surrounding the manor of Audley End House and Gardens (20 minutes) or go further on to see the Jacobean-style Anglesey Abbey and its working watermill (45 minutes). Slightly south east of here (and 50 minutes from the park by car) is Cambridge: visit this university city to punt on the River Cam or explore handsome colleges like King’s, with its huge Gothic chapel, Henry VIII-founded Trinity and St John’s with its 16th-century Great Gate.
