- Beside Brightlingsea Creek, at the mouth of the River Colne
- Under a mile from the harbour, beach and lido of Brightlingsea
- Half an hour from Colchester and under two hours from London
As you might reckon, this is a waterside site. But take a gander at the pics to see just how scenically set is Lakeside Caravan Park, right beside Brightlingsea Creek at the mouth of the River Colne.
Scramble over the site stile for a short cut to Brightlingsea's pleasant harbour where you can sit and watch the boats pass by… or amble around Brightlingsea town (a mile away) to get to the beach, boating lake, open-air pool and visitor information centre.
Brightlingsea is on Essex's south coast, half an hour from Colchester in one direction and Clacton-on-Sea in the other. Mersea Island and the Colne Estuary National Nature Reserve are within easy reach, as is London: it'll take you under two hours to arrive at Brightlingsea starting out from Liverpool Street and changing at Colchester.
The site has electric pitches; toilets and showers; access to grey water and chemical waste disposal. A fenced footpath separates the pitching area from the water, so kids can roam around safely.
To generate better results:
- Choose the 'Multiple units per pitch' filter in the search results.
- Break your booking down into smaller groups and book multiple pitches.
- Click the button ‘Make another booking like this’ on the confirmation page to easily rebook.
- Ask to be sited together in the ‘Special requests’ box on the booking form.
You can also try filtering your search by group type and by sites allowing multiple tents/caravans/motorhomes per pitch.

Brightlingsea's lido and Western Promenade are half a mile away, as is the Brightlingsea ferry point, for trips to Mersea Island by foot ferry, and lunch cruises to Wivenhoe seven miles north near Colchester.
Leave yourself some time to amble around Wivenhoe before boarding the boat back to Brighlingsea: there's a park (painted by Constable) for strolls and handsome scenery, a sailing club, a well-regarded bookshop, and six pubs. The Crab & Winkle Gallery is at the railway station.
Across the Colne by ferry is Mersea Island, where people have lived since before toga times. It's been famed for its oysters since before Roman times too, so seek them out while here at the Company Shed or the West Mersea Oyster Bar, or at the Mersea Island Food, Drink & Leisure Festival every May.
Further afield, set off on an Essex nature hunt at Fingringhoe Wick nature reserve half an hour's drive away, or Colne Estuary National Nature Reserve within 45 just off Mersea. Also 45 minutes away and off Mersea, Cudmore Grove Country Park has meadows, grasslands and a sandy beach, together covering over 100 acres.
