Grass area for tents: flat land with ample space for parking next to your tent

General

  • Peaceful Lake District park near Scafell Peak and Wastwater
  • Local pub within two minutes' walk
  • Well-equipped play area, picnic tables and woodland area

Holy moly. You'll likely already be sold with the Lake District location of welcoming Church Stile Farm Holiday Park, in the midst of superbly scenic Wasdale with close-by climbing and kayaking on Scafell Pike and Wastwater.

But a hard day clambering and kayaking is always best followed by a fine ale and supper at a local watering hole, so you'll likely be sold all the more with Church Stile’s locale only two minutes’ walk from the two pubs and hotel of local hamlet Nether Wasdale. Praise be.

All is praiseworthy on site too: Church Stile Farm Holiday Park covers about seven acres of a spacious oak woodland and wildlife-laden setting, with venerable views of the Wasdale valley and the Screes mountains range.

Facilities are kept to high standards and include free hot showers in separate ladies’ and gents’ washrooms, free hairdryers (for both ladies and gents, hurrah), and a disabled/family room with baby changing unit. The laundry room has hot and cold drink vending machines, a free freezer for ice blocks, and a coin-operated washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board.

To keep the kids happy when they’re not sorting out the laundry, there’s a well-equipped play area with swings and climbing frames, a grass area for ball games, and a woodland area adjacent to the site for wildlife spotting and walks. Picnic tables are dotted around the park and barbecues/firepits are available to hire (pick up essentials for the barbie in the shop and some wood from the Church Stile team).

The campsite was set in wonderful surroundings, the scenery was breathtaking. We had a friendly welcome from the helpful staff. The pitches were well spaced and immaculately kept. The onsite farm shop was well stocked and provided a wonderful selection of pastries and breakfast options. We will definitely return to Church Stile, it was excellent.

The site was great. Very quiet when we visited (late September) with plenty of room between pitches and fantastic views of the surrounding mountains. Staff were extremely pleasant and helpful, from booking us in and showing us where to go and the facilities (it was our first stop incur first motorhome) to telling us about the area. The facilities were very clean and the hot showers were great, as was the washing up area with hot water. Shop was very well-stocked with all the essentials plus local specialities and the breakfast sandwiches were very tasty. Short distance to everything - great walks and two very good pubs.

Pitch the ground was unsuitable for the ground pegs as a result half of the tent collapsed under wind in the middle of the night

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry to hear that half of your tent didn't survive the night. The ground in the Lake District can be pretty hard in places and we do advise using rock pegs for this reason. However, thankfully most of our visitors don't appear to have an issue pitching their tents on the grass here. We certainly hope it doesn't put you off camping in the Lakes in the future.

The views from our pitch were amazing, not overcrowded with tent pitches which meant everybody had adequate space to enjoy their holiday. The staff were very polite and helpful.
The facilities were great - with on site showers (included) and toilets which were very clean.
They were very dog friendly and cooked our pup his own sausage to have with breakfast. Breakfast and hot food can be purchased at the onsite shop which is extremely reasonably priced and is stocked with bits and bobs you are likely to have forgotten to take with you.
Two pubs which serve food (also dog friendly) just a two minute walk up the road which means we weren't too fed up when we had a little bit of bad weather :)

Without a doubt the best camp site I have ever been to.

    Disliked:

Nothing! Although I would not recommend accessing the park with a modified/lowered car as it will scrape badly on the speed bumps (not the sites fault).

Local attractions

Whether you’re climbing, canoeing or just ambling gently around with picnic in backpack, the Wasdale valley is a pretty perfect place for a Lake District hol.

The valley is over 10 miles long if you fancy a full day’s historic hike, starting from the village of Wasdale Head, the start of the Three Peaks Challenge and the former home of Cumbrian pub landlord Will Ritson, whose tall tales led to the still going strong Biggest Liar Competition. One of the tiniest churches in the land, St Olaf’s, is at Wasdale in its ‘Viking fields’: Wasdale was originally settled by Norse farmers and the beams in the church are rumoured to be from Viking longships.

Climbers can get to Scafell Pike and Great Gable from Wasdale Head, but walkers can continue along the valley length down to the village of Gosforth, which has the biggest Viking Cross in England at the Grade I-listed St Mary’s Church.

Finally, fancy the beach? The Cumbrian coast at Seascale is seven miles from Church Stile Farm (walkable, you might reckon), with miles of sandy beach leading to the Lake District’s only coastal village, the fishing village of Ravenglass.

Must see

  • Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (5.3 miles)
  • Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum (13.5 miles)
  • Whinlatter Forest & Visitor Centre (13.9 miles)

National Trust

  • Wasdale, Eskdale and Duddon (0.0 miles)
