  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (premium)

Liked: That it is based in a quiet location and there are lovely walks nearby, you feel as though you are in a secluded location just how we like it but only 25 mins away from Bowness where there is plenty to do if that’s what you would prefer. The campsite was being well maintained whilst we were there toilets were always clean, shop has plenty to offer.

Electric gravel campervan pitch

Liked: Easy to get to, nice clean facilities, lovey host, you are allowed dogs, fire pits. Cute little shop. I had a upgraded pitch due to wet weather, nice views.

Disliked: The upgraded pitch I had needed to be wider because if I didn't have off road tyres on my lwb camper van I would of deffinetly got stuck. So it was difficult getting on and off the pitch and am a good woman driver lol

Non-electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked: The facilities were brilliant, we loved having use of a fridge/freezer. It was it a great location for different walks and was very quiet. We loved having lambs we could see from our tent! Coffee was great in the little shop and pizzas were okay!

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked: Friendly and helpful staff. Pitch location to facilities. Lovely location in the Lake District. Walking routes available and other areas of the Lakes by car. Despite the serious amount of rain prior to arrival the onsite team were super helpful in moving pitches and locations to accommodate and getting us on to the pitch safely. Located a bit out of the way meant the route was quite narrow and windy, so wouldn't be suitable for very large vehicles/motorhomes. But the isolated location was perfect for getting into the countryside and away from many of the more tourist spots.

Disliked: Only two showers in each block but didn't seem to get too busy.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
