General
- Spacious family-friendly site half a mile from Hadrian’s Wall
- A 10-minute drive from Carlisle and 20 minutes from Gretna Green
- Firepits, barbecues, communal lounge, reading room and small library
‘What have the Romans ever done for us?’ you might ask. Well, for one, they built a hulking wall between England and Scotland 2,000 years ago, and lots of it’s still standing. If Hadrian’s Wall is on your bucket list, prepare to cross it off at Roman Wall Lodges, a family-friendly site half a mile from the Cumbrian village of Beaumont.
Not much of the wall is still in place hereabouts, but it’s a cinch to get to the bits that are. For on-foot travels, the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path can be joined in Beaumont, bringing wanderers along to the more well-preserved sections, forts and towns that make up the ancient defence. Completists might prefer to start at the wall’s western end, though, 20 minutes' drive away in Bowness-on-Solway.
This is a particularly scenic part of the world, so be sure to get out and explore south of the wall. National Cycle Route 72 passes through Beaumont and Monkhill (a quarter of a mile away), taking bikers along the Solway Coast to the west and joining up with Cycle Route 7 in Carlisle to the east.
When more leisurely times appeal, firepits are dotted about for cosy outdoors mingling, and the on-site communal lounge has tables and chairs to seat about 12 people. If a bit of peace and quiet is preferred, adjourn to the reading room, where there’s a small library of books to choose from. For eats, it’s first-come-first-served at the on-site barbecues, or a five-minute walk to the local pub serving eats in Monkhill.

Local attractions
On the edge of the scenic Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there’s plenty of reason to spend days exploring pretty countryside vistas hereabouts, but the site is handily placed for urban trips too. It’s about 10 minutes’ drive from base to the small city of Carlisle, famed for its castle (where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for nearly 19 years), cathedral and racecourse.
History buffs have more than Carlisle Castle or the many forts of Hadrian’s Wall to entice round here: the ruins of Lanercost Priory are half an hour away, the spectacular Lowther Castle and Gardens are within about 45 minutes, and it’s 40 minutes to the National Trust’s Wordsworth House and Gardens (yes, that Wordsworth). It’s also just 20 minutes from Gretna Green, so quickie marriages can be dealt with even more quickly than usual.
If nature is still beckoning, the site’s about 40 minutes north of the Lake District, placing hikes, bikes and sailing along Ullswater within easy reach. Otherwise, take a longer drive as far as Newcastle (an hour and a half) and its shops, museums and the Angel of the North.
